Achievement Institute of Scientific Studies

The Achievement Institute of Scientific Studies' (AISS) mission is to help economically disadvantaged high school students gain a university education in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

In 1998 Paul Riordan, after 30 years in education with the Santa Ana Unified School District, decided it was time to retire and pursue a lifelong vision, helping kids achieve a better tomorrow. His true passion came to fruition when he worked with school officials and business leaders to design a program allowing low income students an opportunity for higher education in STEM fields. In 2001 AISS was born. AISS concentrates this effort with students from six high schools in the Santa Ana Unified School District.

AISS operates a comprehensive two year program over the course of the students' junior and senior years of high school. AISS offers 20 to 24 young economically disadvantaged scholars the competitive tools to gain entry into the most prestigious universities in the country where they will study science, technology, engineering and math academic paths.

AISS' current and past scholars represent the top 10% academically in their schools. Most are from economically disadvantaged homes in Santa Ana and are the first in their families to attend universities. Historically the scholars have been overwhelmingly Hispanic (98%) and female (85%).

AISS' program focuses on three major areas: STEM Career Awareness and College Readiness (SAT/ACT preparations, university and scholarship research, advance math tutoring/critical thinking and writing), Life Skills/Cultural Capital (leadership, time management, manners, presentations, business ethics, and networking).

LEAP’s mission is to help disadvantaged students, who are reading below grade level, become confident and successful readers. Our LEAP Reading Intervention Program was created to eliminate the resource disparities that exist between underprivileged students and their peers by providing a free research-based guided group reading program that will ultimately equip our students with the necessary tools to reach their grade level reading goals. LEAP is committed to, and operates under, the belief that all children can learn. Our vision is to break the perpetual cycle of illiteracy and poverty by developing attitudes and behaviors that promote success in school, instill a strong work ethic, and create new paths for a bright and promising future.

LEARN TO BE FOUNDATION

If you google "online tutoring", dozens of results will appear from companies around the world, all charging somewhere between $30-50 per hour.

This effectively prices out lower income families whose children could benefit from these services.

But not anymore.

Learn To Be brings low-cost or free, 1-on-1, online tutoring to K-12 underserved youth around the nation. We work with homeless youth, foster youth and students of otherwise struggling families.

Students are paired with volunteer tutors comprised of high school students, college students and young professionals. The two meet 1-2 times per week in a virtual classroom to work on math, reading, writing or science. To date, we’ve hosted over 34,000 sessions and provided nearly 17,000 hours of tutoring.

We live in a society where the gap between rich and poor grows larger everyday. Closing this gap means providing more high quality opportunities for families who need it most.

We’re doing that at Learn To Be.

Learn To Be is fully sustained from the small hourly fees that some of our families contribute. Now we’re looking to scale our program to tens of thousands of students across the nation; to students like Elliott, who joined our program recently and whose mother had this to say:

“I do believe there is a direct connection between tutoring and his improvements. Not only did I get an email from his counselor but also from his math teacher. The teacher stated that my son is actually participating in class discussions and answering questions aloud. This is a 100% turn around. Thank you for starting a program like this, it’s been a long hard road for my son and his struggles are my struggles. So his triumphs bring me joy in ways I can’t explain. I’m so glad I found Learn To Be.”

We’re not offering any quick fixes or grand solutions. Just a push towards an ideal: Individualized attention for every student who needs it.

South Coast Literacy Council

If you are looking for a little-known but highly deserving charity, we hope you will consider South Coast Literacy Council (SCLC).

We are small - one of the smallest in The Orange County Community Federation - but we put forth a mighty effort. We hope donors will think of us as the little engine that can.

SCLC is an all-volunteer educational and charitable non-profit organization serving south Orange County, California.  Our principal mission is to assist adults in acquiring the English language skills they need for daily living; to take advantage of employment opportunities; and to integrate fully into society.

With so many needs in our society today, the ability to speak and understand English may not appear to be particularly urgent . . . UNLESS YOU CAN'T DO IT!

- Unless you can't help your child with his school homework

- Unless you can't read your child's report card

- Unless you can't explain your symptoms to the doctor

- Unless you are ridiculed when you ask for help in a store

- Unless you can't fill out an application for the job you need

Through its free classes on listening, speaking, reading and writing English, SCLC is helping to address this critical and growing need in our County. We focus on adults because the need is great. According to the latest estimates by the National Center for Education Statistics, 26% of people over 16 years of age in Orange County lack basic literacy skills compared to 23% for the entire state.  Very few organizations offer English language skills to adults and those that do usually charge a fee; e.g. community colleges.

Strategic Kids Fund (SK Fund) was established as a fiscally sponsored project of OneOC, to provide low-income school children in Orange County, California and Metro-Denver, Colorado the opportunity to learn life strategies through Chess, Legos, Magic, Origami, Robotics and other fun, game based activities. We offer specialized classes and workshops that focus on one of these programs right at the child’s school or after school program so no extra transportation is
needed. The project has created and will continue to build partnerships with local schools, businesses, and community nonprofits.

SK Fund’s mission is to partner with the community by teaching life strategies through games and is in pursuit of the following principles:
- Commitment: to build community partnerships and commit to a long-term relationship in
order to help kids develop life skills through play.
- Responsibility: to empower kids by teaching them life strategies so they succeed in
school, career and most importantly …at life.
- Possibility: to expand the perspective of children to make them aware of life's possibilities
and open doors into fields that they never would consider otherwise.
- Support: to surround kids in a caring, inclusive learning environment where the can
comfortably learn and grow as we believe an individual is dramatically influenced by their
support system.

To advance the mission, the Fund will bring game-based enrichment learning to more than 5,000 low-income students annually. The Fund’s vision is to get all kids excited about learning and to teach them life strategies that will help them for the rest of their lives.

UCI School of Law Clinics

UCI Law seeks to create the ideal law school for the 21st century by doing the best job of training lawyers for the practice of law at the highest levels of the profession. Practicing law under close supervision and with time for reflection is a fundamental goal of UCI Law curriculum, and the clinical program, ranked No. 13 in the nation by U.S. News & World Report, is the most important means by which students achieve this goal.

Students choose one of seven different clinics in which they act as the primary legal representatives of their clients. They work to solve problems facing individual clients and problems that affect a larger community, whether within a neighborhood, city, state, country or the world. In the process, the law students become client-centered, culturally competent, ethical, and effective attorneys. Among the UCI Law Clinics available to the students are the Domestic Violence Clinic (DVC), Community & Economic Development Clinic (CED), and the Veterans Clinic.

The mission of the DVC is to provide transformative legal representation to abuse survivors and their children in Orange County while educating law students to become client-centered, culturally competent, ethical, and effective attorneys.

The CED Clinic focuses on issues impacting low- and moderate-income populations, emphasizing non-adversarial, transactional approaches to advocacy. Client work focuses on housing and homelessness, community, small-business and non-profit development, and policy initiatives designed to improve client communities.

The Veterans Clinic’s goal is to create a cohesive network of experienced providers of veterans’ services, making UCI Law one of the premiere institutions for veterans’ benefits claims and discharge upgrades. The Clinic aims to help veterans navigate complicated administrative and legal issues, including military cultural competency, mental health concerns and service members’ interactions with the Department of Veterans Affairs.
