Build Futures

Build Futures provides housing for homeless youth, ages 18-24 years old. We take these homeless youth off the streets of Orange County and provide them with stable, safe housing and the services, resources and support needed to obtain and maintain employment, self-sufficiency and long-term independence.

When youth remain homeless, they are more at risk for physical abuse, sexual exploitation, substance abuse and involvement in the justice system. In addition, they are at a higher risk of becoming chronically homeless adults. Build Futures recognized the gaps in housing and support services for this population in Orange County and fills this gap. We are the safety net for these youth who are so vulnerable and at risk on the streets. We protect them from violence, crime, drugs, human trafficking and the psychological and physical horrors of surviving on the streets. Evidence based studies show that prompt placement in stable housing is the key to overcoming the barriers that perpetuate homelessness.[1]

Build Futures serves a population that has unique challenges when navigating the road to self-sufficiency. These challenges include: no “right to work” documentation, inability to pay for phone or transportation, no prior job experience, limited social or workplace skills, poor nutrition, no high school diploma or gaps in education, no experience with money or banking, legal issues, substance abuse, mental health and medical issues. We welcome the youth that others turn away. Clients receive the support they need because of our low threshold for entry into our program and our ability to provide immediate housing without wait lists and lengthy intake processes. With our support, these youth have the chance to become productive members of the community rather than falling into the perpetual cycle of homelessness and/or the criminal justice system.

Orange County Association For Mental Health

Founded in 1958, the Mental Health Association is a private non-profit community agency dedicated to improving the quality of life of Orange County residents impacted by mental illness through the provision of direct services, education, advocacy and information dissemination.

MHA emphasizes wellness rather than illness. We believe that the diagnosed mental illness is but one element of the entire person. Though the illness may permeate most, if not all aspects of the individual, strengths are retained and/or may have developed in response to the illness.

MHA believes that programs for the seriously and persistently mentally ill must be as multi-faceted as the people they assist. For this reason, we make every attempt to offer a full continuum of care for individuals with a mental illness and ensure our services are accessible, culturally competent, and sensitive to special needs.

OUR FATHERS TABLE

A Christian response to homelessness.
OFT walks alongside our neighbors experiencing chronic homelessness, connecting them to agencies with the goal of ending their cycle of homelessness, ensuring their journey back to RESTORATION.
OFT is the light at the end of the tunnel!  Our Father's Table, OFT,  has a solution that breaks the cycle of chronic homelessness, 1 person at a time. Our work is important because it addresses homelessness at its cause knowing chronic homelessness is a symptom of a deeper-rooted problem.  OFT changes lives, by giving a hand up, not a hand out! Our work is cost effective & it does not create another program.  Our unique approach puts us in the center of their life as mentor, advocate & most importantly genuine friend giving unconditional friendship & guidance.

The crisis of homelessness in OC has been front & center as the media exposed the day-to-day tragedies unfolding in the homeless community.  How can we forget the horrible story that was reported in March of 2018 when a family of 4 died in their mini-van that was also their home.  Then there is the heartbreak of our veterans, who make up 10% of our homeless population. These scenarios could have been avoided if we had more trained Care Navigators so we could expand our canvas area outside of the southern beach cities of OC.

The numbers speak for themselves... In a 12-month period (2014-2015) in OC:
  • $299 million: Governmental & non-governmental entities spent on addressing homelessness. ($106 million spent on all types of housing for the homeless. $193 million spent on healthcare, criminal justice system, governmental & non-governmental agencies.)
  • $100,759: Average annual cost for 1 chronically homeless living on the street or in emergency shelters (OC United Way Cost Study on Homelessness, 2016)
But there is a successful & Christian solution! $12,385 is the cost for OFT to lift 1 chronically homeless person off the streets; a savings of $88,374 per person. OFT averages 30 lifted each  year, a savings of $2,651,220 per year.

At Patriots and Paws we fill a very specific need for many of our Veterans/Active Military and Reservists. Our Veterans have programs that can get them housing in the form of VA loans but don't have it in their budget to fill their home with basic items such as dishes, sheets, beds, a couch, end table, etc.

That is where we come in - we provide items to help make their home complete. We strive to fill the gap in their lives.

Project Dignity

We are a non-profit, volunteer organization founded in 1991.  Our purpose is to provide physical, emotional & spiritual assistance to the homeless living in low income residential motels in Orange County, with special attention given to children, families and the elderly.

We believe that everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect, in a compassionate and caring manner.  We orient the volunteers to love and care for the people we serve, who are in great need.  Our main function is to love our homeless friends.

It is our desire to provide whatever assistance we can to improve the quality of their lives with an eye on helping them get out of the motels.    It is our mission to assist them and ease their daily burdens.  It is our goal to help them successfully move into permanent housing.

It’s not our intent to keep families comfortably in the motels, but to help them find the resources, and confidence to get out.  We do this while keeping in mind that all families develop at their own rates.  Some families will require more help, for longer than others.  Each case is unique and we treat our clients with the dignity they deserve—as individuals.

We particularly wish to give special attention to the children we meet along our daily path.  We will always strive to provide all assistance with love, compassion, humility and dignity.

We desire to help, without over serving.  We desire to serve with wisdom.

RTH Stroke Foundation

The mission of the RTH Stroke Foundation is to eliminate stroke whenever and wherever possible. People suffer 795,000 strokes in the U.S. every year, 144,000 of which result in death.  Stroke is the fifth leading cause of death, and although most strokes occur to people 65 or older, stroke can attack people of any age or gender.

But experts in vascular medicine say that fully eight out of every ten strokes can be prevented. That means we have it in our power to reduce the annual incidence of stroke from 795,000 to less than 160,000, The key is awareness. Only a fraction of the American population understands the lifestyle and medical steps they need to take to keep them out of the high-risk stroke pool. Fewer than one in five can recognize the symptoms of a stroke at its onset.

The RTH Stroke Foundation aggressively pursues this under informed segment of our population. Every year we hold free stroke awareness seminars for several thousand attendees at which experts in the field explain what people have to do to reduce the likelihood of stroke. We conduct free diagnostic screenings for aneurysms, blood pressure, carotid narrowing and cholesterol. These screenings identify people at various stages of risk, including some whose lives may have been literally saved because they had no idea that they had an aneurysm or a severely restricted carotid. And we hold free monthly stroke support meetings to help stroke victims, their families and caregivers learn how to adjust to the stroke victim’s new normal.

The quest to reduce the incidence of stroke so drastically may seem Quixotic to some, but not to us. It’s the reason we come to work every day.

Serve the People’s Mission Statement: “To provide for the physical, mental, emotional and mentoring needs of the poor, children, sick, needy, uneducated, oppressed and lost people. To serve people regardless of religion, ethnicity, race, or gender with love, compassion, and generosity.”

Orange County, home to some of the most exclusive neighborhoods in the nation, is one of the most expensive places to live in the U.S. Despite its affluent reputation, Orange County has significant pockets of poverty where low-income households struggle to afford many basic needs, including nutrition and medical coverage.

Serve the People (STP) provides food, clothing, medical care, and legal assistance, giving a hand up, and not just a hand-out. Since its founding in 2008, STP has centered its programs on the needs of the greater Santa Ana community, providing a trusted resource for people who have nowhere else to go for food and healthcare. STP’s services allow low-income households to temporarily allocate their precious resources towards other household expenses – like housing and transportation

South County Outreach

South County Outreach has worked since 1989 to assist South Orange County residents in need. Initially, that support focused on providing food. In 1991, the focus expanded to include homeless prevention, through the addition of a Rental and Utility Assistance program. The emphasis of the program was stabilization of housing for residents facing a shortfall in a monthly payment. In 1994, the first condominium was purchased to support a homeless family. The number of condominiums has grown to 17. Families in the Transitional Housing Program successfully move from homelessness to permanent housing through a short-term housing solution with emphasis on intensive case management. In 2014, South County Outreach expanded housing stabilization efforts with the addition of a Rapid Rehousing program. Rapid Rehousing allows South County Outreach to assist more households without the financial obligation of purchasing more housing inventory. The mission remains the same, "Preventing Hunger and Homelessness by Helping People Help Themselves."

Mission Statement
Our mission is to deliver a breadth of resources to caregivers, families and patients who are confronting the final stages of life.

Vision Statement:
Our vision is to open a loving home for the last stage that will serve the dying with dignity and compassion in Orange County, CA .

For some, their last moments will be spent alone. For others, they have family but no one to provide continuous care. It is for these people that we initiated the Heavenly Home Project, offering an alternative to institutional care in the final days, weeks or months of life by providing round the clock caregiving services.

Now in the third year of our capital campaign, our Heavenly Home will be a residential home where terminally ill patients can end life’s journey in a comfortable home-like setting. It offers an important option for people who may not have family or friends who can care for them.

The most important thing is that no one will be turned away due to lack of funds.

UCI School of Law Clinics

UCI Law seeks to create the ideal law school for the 21st century by doing the best job of training lawyers for the practice of law at the highest levels of the profession. Practicing law under close supervision and with time for reflection is a fundamental goal of UCI Law curriculum, and the clinical program, ranked No. 13 in the nation by U.S. News & World Report, is the most important means by which students achieve this goal.

Students choose one of seven different clinics in which they act as the primary legal representatives of their clients. They work to solve problems facing individual clients and problems that affect a larger community, whether within a neighborhood, city, state, country or the world. In the process, the law students become client-centered, culturally competent, ethical, and effective attorneys. Among the UCI Law Clinics available to the students are the Domestic Violence Clinic (DVC), Community & Economic Development Clinic (CED), and the Veterans Clinic.

The mission of the DVC is to provide transformative legal representation to abuse survivors and their children in Orange County while educating law students to become client-centered, culturally competent, ethical, and effective attorneys.

The CED Clinic focuses on issues impacting low- and moderate-income populations, emphasizing non-adversarial, transactional approaches to advocacy. Client work focuses on housing and homelessness, community, small-business and non-profit development, and policy initiatives designed to improve client communities.

The Veterans Clinic’s goal is to create a cohesive network of experienced providers of veterans’ services, making UCI Law one of the premiere institutions for veterans’ benefits claims and discharge upgrades. The Clinic aims to help veterans navigate complicated administrative and legal issues, including military cultural competency, mental health concerns and service members’ interactions with the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Womens Transitional Living Center, Inc.

WTLC helps individuals and families escape the depths of domestic violence and exploitation.

Since 1976, our guiding principal has been to end the cycle of domestic violence and exploitation by providing comprehensive services grounded in evidence-based practices. Through a strengths-based, survivor-driven and trauma -informed holistic approach, the survivor’s perspective of their priorities establishes the plan to create a healthier and safer life.

WTLC’s programs are designed to be flexible and responsive to each survivor’s unique needs—each participant builds their recovery plan with their own priorities in mind. In this way, survivors from a range of backgrounds and experiences are able to receive tailored support that addresses their personal barriers to long-term stability. Survivors of domestic violence and human trafficking, as well as their children, receive services designed to meet their individual needs and adapt as necessary throughout their time with WTLC.

WTLC accepts populations that would normally struggle to find support including re-entry survivors coming out of the prison system, survivors with ongoing mental illness problems, survivors struggling with alcohol and drug addition, transgender survivors, emancipated youth and survivors with animal companions.

Last year, WTLC served over 9,000 children and adults through our housing, supportive services and prevention programs. These achievements were made possible by the generous support WTLC receives from individuals, families, corporations, foundations and government agencies.

Domestic violence and human trafficking are major public health crises, and community support and engagement is integral in WTLC’s work to create a world without violence.
