 Our mission is to rescue and re-home as many GSD's as we possibly can each year, growing beyond our current geographic area.

Background Statement

GSROC is a volunteer-driven organization. We were founded in 1999 and incorporated as a public charity in 2009.  We started by saving one dog at a time and we have grown to the point where we save and re-home between 300 - 400 dogs each year. We are funded entirely by private donations and receive no government support. Dogs for adoption are housed in foster home situations and in private boarding facilities.

Approximately 50% of the dogs that we rescue come to us directly from owners who are no longer able to care for them for one reason or another.  Dogs also come to us when owners become ill or hospitalized, when owners pass away, when families lose their homes or lifestyles change.

The other 50% of the dogs in our care are plucked from public animal shelters throughout Southern California when no owner comes to claim them or when they are no longer wanted. We race to save as many of these dogs into our care as we can, however limited space and resources constantly make our task difficult.

WHAT WE DO.

Through a careful screening process, we place loving dogs into forever homes with compassionate individuals and families. We begin with an Application, which tells us more about an individual’s experience level, lifestyle, other pets, preferences, etc. so we can recommend dogs that best fit the home. Prospective adopters are encouraged to meet various dogs and to bring all family members and existing pets to meet the dogs they are interested in. Once “the” dog has been selected, we perform a routine Home Visit to ensure the dog will be safe from any hazards, poisons, or dangerous situations. At this time, we advise the adopter if there are any repairs or corrections that need to be made prior to the dog coming home. Adopters pledge to love and care for the adopted dog throughout its entire lifetime. In the event an adopter is no longer able to care for a dog, we insist it come back into our rescue safety net for re-homing.

WHY WE DO IT.
Despite recent spay/neuter efforts, pet overpopulation continues to cost 6-8 million companion dogs and cats their lives every year. We believe that by focusing on the niche that we know best—German Shepherd Dogs—and by placing the dogs in suitable, lifelong homes, we can significantly reduce the number of animal lives that are lost in our immediate area. We hope to build on the success that we achieve and one day expand our safety net to include shepherds in other areas as well. 


Impact Statement

Our accomplishments from the past twelve months include:
 
1.  In April 2016, we completed our largest rescue ever - 24 German Shepherd Dogs that were part of a group of 35 hoarded and abandoned dogs in the Devore, Ca area.  
2.  For the 2015 year, we re-homed more than 300 German Shepherd Dogs.
3.  For 2015, we increased the number of active volunteers working with GSROC.
4.  For 2015, we created an unusual continuous fund raising campaign, The Tree of Love, where animal lovers can inscribe and have a leaf placed on this unique piece of artwork in Orange County.  The Tree of Love art was donated to us by a supporter, and proudly presents itself in a 3-D format, 7 feet tall by 20 feet wide. 
 
For 2016, our goals include:
1.  Securing rehabilitation equipment so that some of the physically challenged dogs can received therapy to improve their chances to be adopted and beginning to establish our Wellness Clinic for our rescued dogs.
2.  Increase our donor base, by reaching out to organizations such as OneOC.
3.  Increasing the number of active volunteers. 
4.  Beginning to plan for a Sanctuary operation for our elderly dogs. 

Needs Statement

Our top five needs include:
  1. Ongoing Funding.  Each rescued dog requires medical attention (including spay or neutering), shelter and food.  We would like to raise $400,000 each year to offset our costs of our ongoing rescue operations.
  2. Food - we would like to find a continuous supply of canned pumpkin, eggs and dog food to support our rescued friends.
  3. We would like to find a dedicated veterinarian that could help us staff our wellness center in Yorba Linda, CA.
  4. Volunteers - We would like to increase the number of active volunteers by an additional 50 - 75 volunteers.  
  5. We would like be the recipient of predictable charitable gift annuities to allow us to expand our reach with peace of mind that a certain level of funding exists so that we can comfortably continue our mission of establishing a sanctuary in Southern California.
 

CEO Statement

We are an unusual rescue.  We are mostly volunteer-driven, and we rescue and rehome on the average one dog each day of the year.  However, what differentiates us from other rescues is:
 
  1. We are a safety net for the dog for the rest of its life.  Our adoption contract requires an owner who can no longer keep the dog to return the dog to our rescue, NOT to the shelter.
  2. We take in hardship cases, where other rescues do not.  We rescue hoarded dogs, dogs that have been hit by a car, mistreated, abandoned, thrown out of vehicles and more.  We raise the funds to give these dogs the medical attention they need to rehabilitate themselves.  We are proactive in their care and rehabilitation to ensure when the dog is adopted that the dog can become a loving member of the family.
  3. Some of our rescued dogs have been ignored their entire life.  For those dogs, we invest in professional training to help the dog become mannered so that adopters will have an easier time integrating the dogs into their homes.
  4. We assist the adopters if they would like to keep the dog but are having issues.  Sometimes, that means we put the dog back into training or we help with vet bills.  Each situation is different.
Our volunteers are the best and are dedicated and hard working.  Our model works because our volunteers ensure it works.

Board Chair Statement

We have and continue to face many challenges in our rescue operation, including:
  1. The impact of natural disasters - with hurricane Katrina, the Porter Ranch Fire and others we are called upon in an instant to rescue German Shepherd and other dogs that have been left homeless.  Many times, this requires a huge concentrated effort on the part of our volunteers.
  2. The increasing number of elderly dogs that are being delivered to the public shelters.  Many of these dogs are 9 or 10 years old and have issues with bones, hips and more.  We take these dogs in knowing that finding a forever home will probably not happen.  Nonetheless, we raise the funds from our donors to continue their support.  As mentioned previously, one of our longer term goals is to establish a Southern California sanctuary for these elderly dogs - it's the right thing to do.
  3. Everything is important.  Many organizations have the luxury of planning those activities that are "A" priority, "B" priority and so on.  For us, one phone call (such as the one recently where we had to rescue 24 hoarded GSD's all at once) makes everything that was an "A" priority, now a "B" priority - but it all needs to be handled.
Some of our successes over the last year include:
 
  1. Our Blood Donor program.  We have developed a program with local vets whereby our rescued friends donate blood for other rescued friends.  In return, we receive a substantial credit on veterinarian bills.
  2. We have been gratified to see how many of our adopters are third generation adopters.  We believe that is a testament to the vetting process we have developed when we place rescued dogs into a family.
  3. The start of our Wellness Center.  One of our donors has provided us with an underwater treadmill - the first piece of equipment for our Wellness Center where we intend to use specialized equipment to rehabilitate some of our rescued friends after surgeries or as a result of abuse or abandonment.
We look forward to 2017, and to the completion of the Wellness Center and the start of planning for a Southern California Sanctuary.

Other Ways to Donate/Volunteer

We accept donations including:
  1. Cash or check donations
  2. In kind donations to support our fund raising events.  In kind donations can include items that can be auctioned or items that are dog-specific (food, toys, gift certificates to pet stores, etc.)
  3. In kind donations to support our ongoing operations such as dog collars and leashes (400 each year), flea treatment, shampoo and other grooming items.
  4. We accept food donations for the orphans we house, including eggs, canned pumpkin (not pumpkin pie mix) and more.
  5. We accept charitable gift annuities
  6. We accept product donations which will help our orphans, such as equipment to help with rehabilitation.  We are in need of a stand alone treadmill.
  7. We love volunteers and are happy to have as many active volunteers as possible.

Food, Veterinary Expenses and Housing

Estimated Budget is $1,000 per dog rescued.  We rescue between 300 - 400 dogs each year.  Total expected for 2016 is $400,000 and we estimate $425,000 for 2017.

Program Short-Term Success  We provide the spaying and neutering of each of our rescued dogs, if they were not already spayed or neutered.  We also provide the necessary medical attention - many of the dogs have been starved, several have been hit by cars and wounded and most have lacked any veterinary care at all.  We achieve 100% success on each of these measures and we are constantly raising funds for the hardship cases that most rescues will not accept.
Program Long-Term Success  We believe that properly housing, feeding, medically caring for and, when necessary, training rescued German Shepherds and other dogs provides the dog with stability, attention and the ability to integrate into the adoptor's family as seamlessly as possible.
Program Success Monitored By 
We monitor our success by carefully logging and tracking each dog that we rescue.  We know when the dog was rescued, its medical condition, the medical processes performed, the cost of those procedures, the person(s) who adopted the dog. Through a carefully executed follow up system, we communicate with each adopter several weeks after the adoption to check in and to be helpful if we need to be.
 
For the fund raising to pay for these services, we host fund raising events such as Roctoberfest, the Holiday Brunch, the Tree of Love, weekly bake sales and more.  From the years of history that we have, we know if we are on track with our fund raising goals throughout the year.

Wellness Center

Our mission in 2017 is to create a Wellness Center for our injured or sick rescued dogs under our care.  We have already contracted for the location at $2,100 per month and we have our first piece of equipment donated - an underwater treadmill.  To ensure some of our sick dogs receive proper medical attention and to reduce our veterinary housing expenses, we are raising funds to improve our leased facility to allow us to house some of the dogs that are recovering but need to be confined during recovery.  We are budgeting $125,000 per year to complete the improvements and to hire a part-time veterinarian and vet tech to work in the Wellness Center located in Yorba Linda, CA.

Long-Term Care Sanctuary

In 2017, we will begin raising funds to establish a Long-Term Care Sanctuary - hopefully in Southern California.  This Sanctuary will provide a place for our older rescued dogs to live out the entirety of their lives.  Keeping older dogs in concrete dog runs, even with comfortable beds, is very hard on their joints and psyche.

CEO Comments

Our challenges and opportunities for continuing and growing our funding include:
  1. We are in process of broadening our donor base through creative events, marketing and reaching out to organizations such as OC Community Foundation.  These additional donors will allow us to continue or mission and to plan for the future, including planning and adding a sanctuary in Southern California and completing our Wellness Center.
  2. We are developing our endowment plan to solicit and predictable and longer term source of financing for our Sanctuary operations.
  3. We are cultivating sponsorships for our day to day operations, including food, veterinarian services and supplies.
