Background Statement

Background and Inspiration

Although precise statistics are difficult to determine, animal advocacy organizations estimate that approximately 4-5 millions animals are put to death in shelters across the United States each year. Because of their more prolific breeding cycle and other factors, the overwhelming majority of these animals are cats. Feral cats, homeless and largely unadoptable, are routinely euthanized, as are newborn kittens and pregnant cats that demand more care than many overcrowded, underfunded shelters can provide.

In the 1990’s the concept of feral colony management began to spread, along with the practice of trapping, neutering or spaying and releasing (known as TNR) feral cats back into the colony. Long before that method even had a name, one woman, Helen Sanders, saw this problem of homeless, stray cats, and felt they deserved care, not death.   Over the years she even encountered physical threats from people who wanted these stray cats shot, not fed, but she persevered.

Born in 1935, Helen became a fixture in the small southern California beach town in which she lived out her life, pedaling her three-wheeled cycle, big basket in the back filled with bags of cat food. She used specially designed traps to capture cats and have them spayed or neutered and vaccinated, then would release them back into the colony.

She became involved with the local shelter and in addition to her work with feral cat colonies, became known as the ‘go-to’ person for all things ‘cat’, spending hours counseling people in person or on the phone about problem behavior or illnesses. Even as she battled cancer, Helen continued her life’s work up until a couple weeks before her death, riding her familiar trike through alleys, hauling bags of cat food past the beach and over rocks to her waiting "Jetty Cats."

Impact Statement

1. Provided approximately 100 spay/neuter vouchers for owned and free-roaming cats.
2.  Rescued nearly 100 cats from shelters where they would have been killed.
3. Found homes for over 100 cats and kittens.

Needs Statement

1. Funds to cover medical expenses and care for cats.  Medical expenses currently run approximately $75,000 per year.
2. Funding to continue and expand spay/neuter program.  Would like to promote spay/neuter program and build to providing several hundred vouchers per year.  Annual goal for spay/neuter fund is $20,000.

CEO Statement

We focus on saving cats who are on the list to be killed at public shelters.  We also provide spay/neuter vouchers to the public to cut down on the number of unwanted litters and cats entering the public shelter system in the first place.

Board Chair Statement

There is a lot of competition for donations and we understand the demands on people's time and money.  We strive to operate with integrity and accountability to our volunteers, our donors and to the cats in our care.  When we take in a cat, we make a commitment to that cat to find him or her a safe, loving home.  We also make a commitment to care for any medical needs, many of which are costly, such as chronic conditions or surgery.  On occasion, we have had to spend money to place cats who were un-adoptable for whatever reasons with sanctuaries to live out their lives.

Other Ways to Donate/Volunteer

Donations accepted by check mail and PayPal through website at www.helensanderscatpaws.com.  Always looking for great foster homes and volunteers to help with adoption events.
