Overview

Mission Statement

Discovery Arts provides the healing power of the arts to children with cancer and other life threatening illnesses while they are hospitalized for treatment. Our programs, called Arts Adventures, are fun, creative, interactive explorations of music, art, dance and drama that strengthen the emotional health of critically ill children and positively impact their treatment and recovery. By addressing children’s emotional needs, our programs also provide essential, welcome support to both the medical community and the children’s families.

Background Statement

Discovery Arts was created in 1993 by arts and entertainment industry professionals who began volunteering their time and talents to provide music and dance to the children hospitalized at Jonathan Jaques Children’s Cancer Center in Long Beach.  Based upon the positive, enthusiastic response from the children, their families and medical staff, Discovery Arts was formally incorporated as a 501(c)(3) non-profit agency in 1998 with the mission to expand the delivery of these experiences to many more children hospitalized throughout southern California.  Today, we provide regular programs for the children at Mattel Children’s Hospital at UCLA, Miller Children's Hospital Long Beach, Jonathan Jaques Children's Cancer Center at Millers, CHOC Children's Hospital, Fountain Valley Regional Hospital and Medical Center, CHOC at Mission and our first out of state duplication at Mercy Children's Hospital in Springfield, Missouri  serving more than 3,500 critically ill children each year.

Impact Statement

By far, our greatest accomplishment has been the growth and popularity of Discovery Arts over the years. We are so honored to serve these children and are blessed by our hospitals, medical staff, parents and most importantly the children we serve.
We are very honored to have Cathy Rigby, Olympic Champion Gymnast, Actress and Theatre Producer as a Board Member and our official Spokesperson for Discovery Arts.  Cathy recently starred in “Cathy Rigby is Peter Pan” performing on Broadway and in the National Tour while regularly promoting Discovery Arts both at performances and with the media.  You can see Cathy Host a video of "a day in the hospital" and PSA’s for Discovery Arts that can be seen at http://www.youtube.com/discoveryarts.

Discovery Arts is constantly being approached by hospitals, not only here in southern California, but all across the country.  We would like nothing better than to be able to serve all of them.  We have successfully duplicated our program at Mercy Children's Hospital in Springfield, Missouri and would like to keep duplicating our programs and reaching even more children as funding permits.

It's very exciting to see just how much these very sick children enjoy Discovery Arts.  The children ask for it and will wait at the playroom door for us to arrive.  Discovery Arts is an ongoing program serving an unfortunate ongoing need.

“Discovery Arts programs demonstrate to children their potential in participating in activities that introduce them to new talents of their own. Especially for handicapped children, this provides a tool that complements physical therapy programs in terms of mobilization. Most important, Discovery Arts programs help build self-esteem in children with critical illness. All of this is done in an environment that is cheerful, positive and lots of fun… I have personally witnessed the power of Discovery Arts programs to improve the general outlook and attitudes of our hospitalized children and their families… One look at the faces of our patients and their families and I know you’ll become a believer like me.”

Dr. Jerry Z. Finklestein, Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at UCLA School of Medicine and Founding Medical Director, Jonathan Jaques Children’s Cancer Center

Needs Statement

All of our programs and services are offered free of charge and we rely on the generosity of individuals, corporations and the foundations who partner with us to help bring "Arts Adventures" and a myriad of supplies to over 3500 children and their families each year.

During every "Arts Adventure" the children choose a brand new costume that they keep and will often sleep in.  Each child receives a brand new costume each and every time they are with us.  They also enjoy the music, art projects, dance and drama activities and receive a Discovery Arts' "Bedside Adventure Kit", costume accessories, endless Art supplies, photo keepsakes, trophies, awards, make-up and facepainting, musical instruments, tap and ballet shoes and so much more.

We are always in need of volunteers, committee organizers for events, development help and more.  Feel free to call us anytime for further information.  (714) 637-1774

CEO Statement

Every single day we realize that life changes forever for too many children diagnosed with cancer or a life threatening illness. The emotional trauma that they experience is enormous and their need is great. Children need relief from the separation and loneliness of hospitalization. We believe that Discovery Arts helps them feel and think differently about their time in the hospital. We know that the children take less pain medication on the days we are there and we are greatly encouraged about our growth in the future.

Board Chair Statement

Discovery Arts has provided countless hours of creative artistic help and support for children suffering from cancer or life threatening illnesses.  All of the members of our Board of Directors consider it a privilege to serve these children.

Children diagnosed with cancer will sometimes travel great distances for treatment.  Not every hospital is equipped to provide this care.  Discovery Arts provides regular programs for the children in treatment at Mattel Children’s Hospital at UCLA, Miller Children’s Hospital Long Beach, Jonathan Jaques Children's Cancer Center at Millers, CHOC Children’s Hospital, Fountain Valley Regional Hospital and Medical Center and CHOC at Mission, serving more than 3,500 critically ill children each year. We have recently taken our first step outside of California and added a new program at Mercy Children’s Hospital in Springfield, Missouri. We are very excited about the successful duplications of our program, the very positive responses by the hospitals, staff and families and are planning to implement further programs and hospitals as funding permits.

Programs

"Arts Adventures"

Our Programs, called "Arts Adventures", are fun, creative, interactive explorations of music, art, dance and drama, which strengthen the emotional health of critically ill children to help them better cope with the tremendous difficulties of critical illness. Arts Adventures encourage and enhance children’s cognitive development, imagination, creativity, socialization skills and gross motor skills. Under the guidance of professional artists and volunteers, children embark on magical creative adventures that strengthen their ability to cope with the trauma of their illness and positively impact their treatment and recovery. By addressing children’s emotional needs, our programs also provide essential, welcome support to both the medical community and the children’s families.

Program Short-Term Success  Arts Adventures is an on-going program serving an on-going need. Hospital patient populations change constantly: the frequency and duration of hospitalization differs with each patient depending on their particular illness and treatment schedule, and new cases are diagnosed everyday. Discovery Arts is committed to ensuring that every child hospitalized with cancer or life threatening illness can experience the healing benefits of the arts by providing consistent and on-going "Arts Adventures" programs to our current hospitals served. In spite of the difficult economy we have maintained our programs and always look for opportunities to increase and add additional programs as funding allows.
Program Long-Term Success  Discovery Arts was created in 1993 by arts and entertainment industry professionals who began volunteering their time and talents to provide music, dance, art and drama to children with cancer hospitalized at Jonathan Jaques Children’s Cancer Center in Long Beach. Based upon the positive, enthusiastic response from the children, their families and medical staff, Discovery Arts was formally incorporated as a 501(c)(3) non-profit agency in 1998 with the mission to expand the delivery of these creative experiences to many more children hospitalized throughout southern California. We are very excited about the successful duplication of our program and are planning to implement further programs as funding permits.
Program Success Monitored By  The success of our programs have received special recognition and Awards from Disneyland (Leadership Award), The Samueli Foundation (Big Heart Award), CBS News “What’s Right with Southern California”, NBC News special segment with Cary Burgland, A Feature segment on Direct TV’s “Hometown Heroes”, many radio and television interviews, news and magazine articles and have received national recognition with our Spokesperson Cathy Rigby, Star of “Peter Pan”, Olympic Gymnast,Actress and Theatre Producer.
Examples of Program Success  The medical community has also recognized the benefits of our programs, evidenced by the following comments from Dr. Jerry Z. Finklestein, Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at UCLA School of Medicine and Founding Director of Jonathan Jaques Children’s Cancer Center: “Discovery Arts programs demonstrate to children their potential in participating in activities that introduce them to new talents of their own. Especially for handicapped children, this provides a tool that complements physical therapy programs in terms of mobilization. Most important, Discovery Arts programs help build self-esteem in children with critical illness. It also has had an incredible impact on the families and staff.” Dr. Ernest R. Katz, Clinical Professor, Behavioral Sciences, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles “Discovery Arts, every Thursday afternoon, provides joy and healing to patients in our Pediatric Hematology/Oncology inpatient ward at Miller Children's Hospital. Sometimes the miracles are subtle - a child laughing that had seemed intimidated by hospitalization. Other times, the effect is more remarkable. We believe the combination of art and music, along with laughter, play in a fun environment, provides something our medicines and treatment plans just can't quite provide. Please continue your exceptional program.” W. Mark Roberts, M.D., Medical Director, Jonathan Jaques Children's Cancer Center Associate Chief Medical Officer, Miller Children's Hospital
