Background Statement

Laura’s House is a nonprofit organization that was established in 1994 to provide domestic violence-related services to the residents of south Orange County, California.  Today, the organization serves as the only state-approved comprehensive domestic violence agency in the south county area, serving over 915,000 residents in 22 communities.  Over the past 24 years, Laura's House has provided shelter and support services to more than 5,000 battered women and children and counseling, life skills education and legal assistance to over 55,000 persons.  The mission statement of Laura’s House is as follows: Changing social beliefs, attitudes and the behaviors that perpetuate domestic violence while creating a safe space in which to empower individuals and families affected by abuse.  Laura’s House successfully provides a comprehensive and effective range of accessible programs and services that address the issue of domestic violence and promote community health and safety.

Impact Statement

Laura’s House domestic violence emergency shelter and supportive services provides a comprehensive range of services that address the issue of domestic violence and promote community health and wellness, including an Emergency Shelter, a Counseling and Resource Center, Legal Adovocacy, Children’s Therapeutic Programs, a Transitional Living Center, and Community Outreach, Prevention and Education  Programs. As domestic violence is a prevalent social issue affecting a growing number of people (with the majority of domestic violence victims being low-income women and children who have limited or no financial resources and access to support services), we strive to break the cycle of violence through empowering clients with the knowledge and tools to change to live out healthy relationships.


Needs Statement

Domestic violence is a pervasive social problem and continues to be the leading cause of injury to women nationwide. The impact of domestic violence includes physical and psychological trauma, isolation from family and friends, harm to children witnessing or experiencing violence in their homes, homelessness, reduced employability and lost work productivity, substance abuse, and a host of other physical and mental health issues.  While the exact number of victims is impossible to determine, we estimate that well over 250,000 women and children are directly affected by domestic violence in Orange County alone and that this number continues to increase and is higher than the national average.  The 2011 Orange County Community Indicators Report documents that 10,377 domestic violence-related calls were received by law enforcement agencies in 2009, a 2% increase from the previous year.  The 2009 Orange County Homeless Report states that of the 21,479 homeless persons in the county, over 2,500 are women who have experienced domestic violence.  Further, Laura’s House receives over 2200 calls to our 24-Hour Crisis Hotline per year.  Although studies estimate that more than 7,000 women and children in Orange County become homeless each year as a result of domestic violence,  there are only four domestic violence organizations in Orange County (with a total of 416 emergency shelter beds) serving a population of over 3,100,000 persons.

The majority of our clients are low or very low income, and over 90% of our clients identify themselves as “head of household with no income” upon entering our program.  In order to serve this population we rely on the generous support of our individual and corporate donors, friends and volunteers. In-kind services and donations to our Resale Stores are much appreciated, with the profit from these items going back to the programs we provide.

Our success as an agency relies on our commitment to constantly appraise our services, review our results and search for opportunities to improve and expand.  We are pleased that our programs and projects have been seen as meritorious and worthy of funding and we appreciate the continued involvement and support of the individuals, business and agencies that make up the community we serve.


Board Chair Statement

I was introduced to Laura’s House in 2012 and promptly joined the board of directors, at the invitation of Wayne Pinnell, a long time board member and committed advocate for the agency. Since my joining, I have had the privilege to meet a group of very dedicated individuals, all united by the passion they have to serve victims of domestic violence and their families. Having a young family myself, I feel particularly compelled to address the devastating impact of domestic violence not only on families, but also affecting our local communities where we live and work.  I was honored to take on the role of Board Chair in January 2017, at a very exciting time for Laura's House , as we continue to grow and expand our capacity to serve and meet the needs of our community members. 

Throughout my time spent on the board, I have seen the increasing prevalence of domestic violence in the national media, affecting pop stars, sports figures and many horrific stories ending in tragedy. Laura's House has been active in breaking the silence of domestic violence since its inception in 1994, and now more than ever playing an active role both locally and nationally, uncovering the dynamics of this issue, breaking down misnomers, and making a commitment to the education and prevention of domestic violence. As just a few examples of our recent initiatives, we have taken an active role as advocates by:

- Assuming leadership positions on the California State led partnership to end domestic violence (CPEDV) and being active in public policy;

- Engaging in strategic corporate partnerships with national brands, to further our message to a broader audience; and

- Innovating, developing and expanding programs that meet the immediate needs of our clients through various therapeutic techniques, practices, resources and education, as well as eliminating barriers such as transportation.

The ability to meet these needs effectively comes from the support of generous individual and corporate donors, family foundations, civic organizations and our long-term gifts left through legacy estate planning. Laura's House is grateful for these long-time partnerships and continues to strive to ensure that funding sources are diversified and sustainable.

During my tenure on the board of directors, we have achieved many important milestones, including opening a new North Orange County location, which houses our expanded Legacy Advocacy Program, as well as significantly expanding our Prevention and Education department and efforts, educating now nearly 12,000 youth in OC about teen dating abuse, red flags and the elements that make up a healthy relationship. Our Board of Directors works tirelessly to support Laura's House, through their volunteerism and service on various internal Committees, through financial support, serving on our Speakers Bureau and lending their skill sets to improve and propel the mission of Laura's House forward.

At this stage in the agency's lifecycle, there are so many ways for people to get involved - from plugging in to help through the various volunteer opportunities, to service on the board of directors, to financial support. The staff and board at Laura's House can provide a wealth of information to anyone who is looking for a worthy cause with which they can share their time, talents and financial resources. I encourage you to get involved and be an active advocate and voice for those affected by domestic violence.

24-Hour Crisis Hotline

Providing immediate crisis intervention and assistance to domestic violence victims through 24-hour telephone response.

Program Long-Term Success  Laura's House has operated the 24-Hour Hotline for the last 24 years and has provided crisis intervention, safety planning, resources, information and referrals to assist Domestic Violence victims in crisis. 
Program Success Monitored By  All calls are documented utilizing a standard call form which is reviewed by the Hotline Coordinator and Shelter Administrator. Linkages are then made from outreach efforts and referrals from other agencies.

The feeling of walking away from your abuser and life as you know it, and literally stepping off the precipice of the unknown is a terrifying experience.  I was met with such support and encouragement! With all my gratitude!  

Emergency & Transitional Shelter Programs

Providing up to 45 days of shelter, food and clothing, case management, individual and family counseling, life-skills training, and legal and social services advocacy to women and their children who are fleeing family violence and would otherwise become homeless and the Transitional Living Program providing housing and support services for up to 6 months to help them remain independent, maintain economic self-sufficiency and be free of violence.

Through their participation in the Emergency Shelter Program, 85% of battered women increased their knowledge of domestic violence and improved their self-esteem and cognitive coping skills. 72% of battered women increased their knowledge of co-dependency and anger management skills. 79% of clients secure safe permanent or transitional housing. 
 
Through their participation in the Transitional Living Center Program, 90% of residents will secure permanent housing, increase their employment skills, and achieve employment. 
Program Long-Term Success  Over the past 24 years, we have assisted more than 5,500 battered men, women and children in breaking their multi-generational cycle of violence and empowering them to live violence free lives.
Program Success Monitored By  The programs are monitored by both quantitative and qualitative measurement tools. Quantitative measurements identify the number of participants and services received per program. Qualitative measurements are obtained via pre/post testing tools completed by participants as well as client satisfaction surveys. This input allows us to gauge the effectiveness of our programs, services, and staff in meeting client needs and allows us to assess our program curriculum. The program oversight is provided by our onsite Clinical Director, who is a licensed Marriage & Family Therapist. 
Examples of Program Success 
When Mary arrived at our Emergency Shelter with her children, a son age 7 and a daughter age 4, she was afraid of all the uncertainties she was facing. She was leaving a ten year marriage filled with emotional, physical and financial abuse. Mary knew that she needed a safe place to stay and a good support system to permanently end their cycle of violence. Mary was especially worried about her children as both had witnessed their father abusing their mom. Sam was also a recipient of direct abuse from his dad. Both Sam and Lily participated in our on-site Children’s Therapy Program. Mary also participated in individual and group counseling as well as life-skills classes. Through counseling she was able to face her biggest emotional obstacles of fear, co-dependency and low self-esteem. At the time of this report, Mary has been accepted into our Transitional Living Program, been able purchase a vehicle, secure employment, is furthering her education, started a savings account, and reports that her children have improved so much by being at Laura’s House. They are so happy to be living in a safe supportive home and living free from domestic violence.

Counseling & Resource Center

Offering those who are in need of non-residential assistance offering individual and group counseling, educational workshops case management, social services referrals, housing assistance, and legal advocacy services to receive the necessary support and skills to resolve, educate, empower and heal from the effects of domestic violence.

Program Long-Term Success  Over the last 24 years, we have provided a safe space for victims of domestic violence to participate in counseling, life skills education, and legal assistance. We have assisted over 55,000 persons to break their cycle of violence and reduce symptoms related to the trauma.  
Program Success Monitored By  The programs are monitored by both quantitative and qualitative measurement tools. Quantitative measurements identify the number of participants and services received per program. Qualitative measurements are obtained via pre/post testing tools completed by participants as well as client satisfaction surveys. This input allows us to gauge the effectiveness of our programs, services, and staff in meeting client needs and allows us to assess our program curriculum. The program oversight is provided by our onsite Clinical Director, who is a licenses Marriage & Family Therapist. 
Examples of Program Success 

Amy had grown up in an abusive home and continued her cycle of abuse by marrying an abusive partner.  After 18 years of living this way, it was seeing the effects of the abuse on her 4 children, that finally gave her the strength to make a change and reach out for help.  She confided in her Pastor and he was aware of a place where she could get help. 
Amy and her children participated in multiple services at our Counseling & Resource Center: Individual & Family Counseling, Personal Empowerment Classes, Legal Assistance to obtain a restraining order to increase safety.  Amy is especially proud of her teenage son who wanted to participate in individual counseling as he was fearful he would repeat his Dad’s pattern of behavior and did not want to.
Amy secured a job and was able to move with her children into their own apartment.  Today this family is putting into practice on a daily basis their new healthy relationship skills and have much hope for a safe and happy future.


Children's Therapeutic Programs

Providing a safe and nurturing environment for children who are affected by domestic violence to obtain therapeutic assistance, education and support to heal from their experiences, located at both our Counseling and Resource Center and our Emergency Shelter.

Program Short-Term Success  84% of child victims exhibited improvement in post-traumatic stress symptoms, anxiety, and depression. 70% of battered women exhibited improved parenting skills. 78% of child victims demonstrated improved social functioning through their participation in the Therapeutic Children's Program.
Program Long-Term Success  Over the last 18 years, the Therapeutic Children's Program facilitated through our onsite Preschool and after school programs has assisted child victims of domestic violence to reduce post-traumatic stress symptoms and improve social functioning skills. 
Program Success Monitored By  The programs are monitored by both quantitative and qualitative measurement tools. Quantitative measurements identify the number of participants and services received per program. Qualitative measurements are obtained via pre/post testing tools completed by participants as well as client satisfaction surveys. This input allows us to gauge the effectiveness of our programs, services, and staff in meeting client needs and allows us to assess our program curriculum. The program oversight is provided by our onsite Clinical Director, who is a licenses Marriage & Family Therapist. 
Examples of Program Success  When David, age 4 entered the shelter he did not talk much at all.  When he wanted something he would use one or two words to ask. He was very withdrawn and was sleeping a good part of the day. When asked a question he would shake his head yes or no. On the third day in the Children’s Program we started to notice a change. The children were painting and David asked if he could paint too. He sat down and began painting a picture of a house with a rainbow. By the end of the following week he was speaking in full sentences and playing with the other children. By week four, David is now the child who speaks the most and welcomes the new children to the room. The greatest moment for staff was when his Mom came to get him one day from the classroom and she shared that she had no idea what an impact the yelling and fighting in their home had had on him. She said he was like a different child, talking and telling her how much he loved her. For staff it has been such a joy to be an integral part of this Mom and child’s healing. David and his Mom have broken their cycle of violence and now have a happy and violence-free life.  

Community Outreach Programs

Educating adults and youth about domestic violence and prevention methods, including our Healthy Emotions and Attitudes in Relationships Today (H.E.A.R.T.) workshop program for at-risk youth, our 40-Hour Domestic Advocate State Certified Training Program for adults, and our Community Outreach efforts and Community Engagement program and Speakers’ Bureau.

Program Short-Term Success  Through the outreach program in 2017 we participated in 219 events and reached 11,184 individuals increasing their awareness of domestic violence and available resources for assistance.  Through the HEART program in 2017 a total of 12,638 youth were reached through 317 workshops.  Feedback from the teens via pre/post testing tools reflect the increase in the awareness and healthy relationship skills. 
Program Long-Term Success  Over the last 24 years, we have provided outreach and education services to the general public to increase awareness and knowledge of domestic violence and information on available resource for intervention.  In response to identifying teen dating violence correlating with domestic violence, our agency designed the Healthy Emotions & Attitudes in Relationships Today  (H.E.A.R.T) Program, an interactive workshop program held in schools, detention facilities, community youth facilities to educate youth on teen dating and domestic violence issues and provide tools for them to build healthy relationship skills to end the multi-generational cycle of violence.  Also through our teen website, youth can complete a pledge card indicating their long-term commitment to be a teen dating violence prevention advocate, through our Heart Chat line platform, IM and text.
Program Success Monitored By  Through the HEART Teen Violence Prevention Program the teens participate in a pre/post testing evaluation to determine a change in their knowledge and relationship skills awareness.  This information is assists us in determining the quality of the workshops and also allows for a comment section to provide direct feedback from the teen on their workshop experience.  This information is maintained and reviewed by the Prevention Education Specialist.

CEO Experience

Margaret was born in Yorkshire, England where she qualified as a Fellow of The Institute of Legal Executives at Leeds University and worked with several large general practice law firms.  She spent 4 years in Paris, Franc before relocating with her husband to California in 1994.  Margaret and her husband settled in Capistrano Beach in the summer of 1997.


Margaret began volunteering in the legal advocacy department of Laura’s House in January 1997 and was hired in February 1998 as a legal advocate.  She developed the Legal Department, hired additional staff after which was promoted to Operations Director from 1999 – October 2000.  She was hired as the Interim CEO/Executive Director from November 2000 through August 2001 and accepted the position of CEO/Executive Director in September of 2001.  Since that time, Margaret, has taken the agency to an operating budget of $2.7 million and revenue over $4 million annually.

Ms. Amy Borst Clinical Director

Amy Borst started at Laura’s House in May 2006 as a part-time Clinical Supervisor of all the therapists and student therapists at both the Emergency Shelter and the Counseling and Resource Center, while simultaneously working in private practice as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist.  Amy quickly graduated in September 2006 to working as the Manager of the Counseling and Resource Center, with a title of Clinical Services Manager.  Amy’s responsibilities increased in December 2009 upon taking on oversight of the Legal Department.  A promotion to Clinical Director (or, Director of Client Programs) ensued in July 2010 wherein oversight expanded to all service delivery, encompassing Emergency Shelter services as well.

Amy’s well-rounded experience prior to Laura’s House includes working with the substance abuse population, providing comprehensive therapeutic services to adolescents and latency-aged children, as well as their families within a residential treatment center, coordination of a community-based service program entitled Therapeutic Behavioral Services, and work with the chronically mentally ill adult population.  Amy completed her graduate degree of Clinical Art Therapy at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles in May of 1998 and achieved her license as a Marriage and Family Therapist in September of 2002.  Amy also maintains a Board-Certified Art Therapy Registration and is currently in the process of pursuing a grandfathering-in to become a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC).

Laura Kelly has been with Laura’s House since November 2006 and was initially hired as the Executive Assistant to our Executive Director.  In 2008 Laura was promoted to Human Resource & Office Manager.  In 2011 Laura was promoted to Director of Operations.  Laura has been successful in assisting the various departments with their operational needs which includes a significant role in the shelter rebuild, transitional property acquisition and property preparation for program launch.  In 2009 she played a significant role in the relocation of our Resale Store.  She is the staff liaison of the newly formed Operations Board Committee.  She also handles payroll, employee relations, recruiting/staffing, IT and she evaluates for more streamlined, efficient processes.   

Laura attended Sawyer Business College where she obtained a Legal Secretarial Certificate.  In addition she has taken several law related courses through the Extension program at the University of California, Irvine. 

Laura obtained her real estate license through Allied Real Estate College

In 2009 Laura completed the Human Resources Management Certificate Program through the University of California at Irvine. 

In her spare time, Laura volunteers with the Local Orphan Care Initiative.  She resides in Mission Viejo with her husband Jerry and her two children are currently away attending college.  

 
Ms. Andrea McCallister Director of Development & Communications

Andrea McCallister is the Director of Development & Communications for Laura's House, a non-profit assisting families affected by domestic violence. She has been with Laura's House since May 2006 and has been responsible for special events, fundraising, marketing and communications for the organization. Prior to her time at Laura's House, Andrea worked for the Environmental Media Association in Los Angeles, promoting environmental awareness through television and film. She came to EMA, after 5 years of event planning for Levy, Pazanti & Associates in West Los Angeles. Andrea was an event coordinator, coordinating benefit concerts, movie premieres and dinners for non-profits in the entertainment industry, with many clients including Adopt-A-Minefield, Legal Aid Society of Los Angeles, Environmental Media Association, National Center on Poverty Law, the Producers Guild, and Women In Film.

Andrea graduated from Southern Methodist University with a BA in Psychology. She is a member of Delta Gamma sorority, and has volunteered with Junior League of Los Angeles, Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation and Orange County Rescue Mission. She resides in Newport Beach, CA with her husband Benn and daughter, Elle Alexandra.

Laura’s House depends on the collaboration and assistance of a number of government and social services professionals and organization, including social service caseworkers, healthcare and mental health providers, law enforcement agencies, judicial officers, adult education centers, school districts, legal and social services organizations, the State Employment Development Department and the County Department of Public Social Services.  We also work cooperatively with the other three domestic violence shelters in Orange County in the development of programs, service plans and client referrals so that our clients have seamless access to vital information and services.
