Overview

Mission Statement

The mission of Forever Footprints is to ensure that families who have suffered a pregnancy or infant loss receive the best support, comfort, and resources possible. To do so, Forever Footprints provides families with direct services, educates the medical community to improve quality of care and response, and offers opportunities for remembrance to help families find their own path to healing.

Background Statement

14 years ago, Forever Footprints Co-founder, Kristyn von Rotz, gave birth to her first child, Joseph Thomas. He weighed just 1 pound, was 13 inches long, and had a rare and fatal brain abnormality. He died in Kristyn’s arms just minutes after he was born. In the days following his death, Kristyn realized she needed to do something to help other mothers and families who had lost a baby, to honor Joseph’s memory, and to improve the care and support available to families experiencing the tragic loss of a child. Partnering with Lyndsey McLaughlan, another grieving Orange County mother, they co-founded Orange County Walk to Remember in 2005, which changed names to Forever Footprints in 2014.

Dedicated to helping parents and families who have lost a baby during pregnancy or infancy, Forever Footprints is a community-based advocacy, outreach, resource and referral organization that strives to improve the health and wellness of Southern California families experiencing the tragic loss of a child. To address disparities within the healthcare setting, Forever Footprints (1) conducts training and educational seminars on pregnancy and infancy loss, bereavement, community resources and protocol implications for healthcare institutions and professionals; (2) provides information and resource referral brochures to labor and delivery units at area hospitals, as well as obstetric and gynecology (OB/GYN) physician offices.

To meet the mental health needs of these families Forever Footprints offers Support Programs:

Forever Footprints Support Groups

The Balancing Life & Loss: Parenting After Loss Group, in Long Beach, is a free support group that addresses the needs of bereaved parents who, after a tragic loss, need to continue living and parenting their surviving children.

The Coping With Loss: Helping Families With The Loss Of A Child Through Miscarriage, Stillbirth, and Early Infancy Group, in Orange, Chino and Long Beach are a free support groups for bereaved parents and families who have experienced the loss of a child and need a place to help process their  experience and be able to heal.

Journey to Remember Program

The Journey to Remember Program is a perinatal comfort care program created to provide a safe and nurturing environment for families who wish to carry to term despite a life-limiting or fatal diagnosis. We provide sensitive care facilitated by a labor and delivery nurse trained in bereavement with personal experience in perinatal loss during the pregnancy, delivery, and follow up bereavement support for the years to come.

Impact Statement

Forever Footprints is proud of our annual impact in 2017:

  • Over 75 families have been comforted after receiving a fatal diagnosis of their baby in our Journey to Remember Perinatal Hospice Program.
Forever Footprints programmatic and financial goals for 2018 include:
  1. Host the 14th Annual OC Walk to Remember and 9th Annual IE Walk to Remember honoring all the babies gone too soon with over 4,000 surviving family members and community members.
  2. Raise more than $100,000 in individual contributions and sponsorship to fund our support programs; increase o ur revenue by 10%.
  3. Engage 300 individuals who have experienced pregnancy or infancy loss in our area support groups and have 30 additional families participate in our Journey to Remember Perinatal Hospice program.
  4. Add additional support groups for men, grandparents and those pregnant and parenting after loss in other areas of Orange County and the Inland Empire. We would love additional groups in Southern OC and Riverside.

Needs Statement

Sadly, one in four women will lose a baby to miscarriage, stillbirth or a terminal neonatal diagnosis. In Southern California, thousands of women experience these losses each year. As an advocacy and support organization, our greatest need is for financial resources to provide information, referrals, bereavement supplies and therapeutic support to families facing the tragic loss of a child.

Our greatest needs:

  • $120,000 to provide bereavement supplies to our families who attend our support groups or participate in our Journey to Remember perinatal hospice program.
  • $39,000 to increase our support groups to two additional cities where there are no support groups to support grieving parents.
  • $15,000 to host educational seminars and conferences for physicians, nurses and staff working directly with grieving families
  • $5,000 to add an additional mothers day and father day event for grieving families. These days are benchmarks that are extremely isolating for families who have lost babies.  We want to host parents who have lost children to provide mental wellness services and promote healthy coping behaviors.

CEO Statement

I am so inspired by the strength of the families we serve.

I am humbled to be the new Executive Director of Forever Footprints since 2017.  On my first day at the office, a family walked into our office after leaving the hospital.  They lost their baby at 8 months, and had no idea how they were to carry on with their lives.  They sat in their car in the parking lot for over an hour, not saying anything to each other.  After a google search on grief and loss, they walked into our offices filled with tears seeking support.  As the broken hearted mother shared with us, "I don't know how to move on. I am completely lost."  We shared with them our counseling services and the grief and healing process began.
Sadly, there are countless families who go through loss and need our service.  With a limited budget, and the organization being without an  Executive Director for two years, we are often not able to support all the families who reach out to us.  This is an exciting time to invest in Forever Footprints as we are poised for growth in 2018/2019.  I'd love to speak with you and learn how you would like to become involved with Forever Footprints.

Board Chair Statement

As the Founder and Board Chair, I've never been more excited for my sons legacy- as well as all the babies gone too soon.  We've been on an incredible journey of hope and healing since I founded Forever Footprints in 2005. We've always grown organically, and have prided ourselves on our care and compassion.  This year, we invested in an Executive Director for the organization.  This is our next chapter for our organization.  Our babies legacy will grow and their lives will continue to bring hope and healing to thousands of families in Orange County, Long Beach, and the Inland Empire. We're poised for growth in 2018/9, and look forward to working harder than ever to help families who are coping with loss. I hope you will join our mission for the families and children in our community.

Other Ways to Donate/Volunteer

Donations are accepted online at https://foreverfootprints.givingfuel.com/donate-to-forever-footprints . You can make automatic monthly donations as well. Checks are accepted too. $50 sponsors a sibling backpack for a family with a child that is grieving for their sibling who has passed away. $25 will sponsor a memory box given to a family at a hospital when their baby passes away to hold their most cherished baby items in remembrance. We have a golf tournament, two 5K's, and various events where we would love sponsorships and inkind food and drink items. Volunteers are always needed at our October 5K Walk in OC and IE, along with marketing, social media, PR, event and other expert volunteers.

Program Success Monitored By
The success of this program can only be monitored by the thanks we receive from the families who have participated in the program.  We know we have been successful when parents are enabled to parent through love instead of fear, discovering how to honor and celebrate your baby, giving you the freedom to grieve, all while experiencing joy amongst the pain.

We also ask families to anonymously self report in an annual survey that measures coping, depression, anxiety and other indicators of mental wellness after birth or miscarriage.
Examples of Program Success
Our beautiful little girl, Nevaeh Maria, was diagnosed early on in my pregnancy with Trisomy 18. This genetic syndrome is considered to be "incompatible with life." Our family was devastated. Fortunately, we were led to Amanda from Journey to Remember. This program was, and continues to be, such a blessing to us. Amanda turned our feelings of despair into hope and encouraged us to create memories with our little Nevaeh-memories that are priceless. Journey to Remember was a beacon of hope that we will be indebted to always. Because of the care Journey to Remember gave, our memories of our beautiful Nevaeh have been captured forever. Although Nevaeh only spent a short three and half days with us after birth, the love and happiness she gave to us will live in our hearts forever.
- Michele Perez

Sibling Backpacks

A sibling backpack is a new offering for our families to use as a therapeutic coping tool that is age appropriate for their living children.  It is a backpack that is filled with age appropriate journals and books for older children as well as coloring books and grief teddy bears for younger children. The backpack is a method to engage your living children in a guided series of discussion that promote positive grief coping and positive mental health.
Budget  8,500.00
Category  Youth Development, General/Other Youth Development, General/Other
Population Served People/Families of People with Health Conditions Children Only (5 - 14 years)
Program Short-Term Success  90% of children who receive a sibling backpack will exhibit changed behavior and have learned positive coping skills in dealing with the loss of their sibling.
Program Long-Term Success  100% of families in our support groups will receive a Sibling Backpack. Right now, due to limited funding, only 50% of participants receive a backpack.
Program Success Monitored By  Annual parental reporting, self reporting from youth, and counselors notes will all be factored in positive coping skills.
Examples of Program Success  25% of our existing families already have a living child, when the loss of the baby occurs.  Parents are dealing wit their grief themselves, so it often difficult to be there for your living child as well. Families report that having a child friendly and age appropriate back back filled with Grif and coping books help open up their living children to conversations that benefit that whole family. Parents feel less scared to have conversations with their living children due to the tools and resources provided with the pack backs.

Memory Boxes

When a family experiences loss, most hospitals do not provide families with anything to put their baby's items in.  Sometimes, they are given a trash bag for their items, and they leave with empty arms, instead of taking their baby home.  It is a moment most families should never face, which surprisingly happens too often.
Our memory boxes are provided to hospitals and individuals at no cost so they have a high quality memory boxes to put their baby's items in after a loss. We have pictures, resources, comfort care items such as tissues and snacks, a baby blanket and beanie and other items that have been proven to help families while dealing with a baby with a sickness that is told will not survive.
Budget  $8,500.00
Category  Health Care, General/Other Patient & Family Support
Population Served People/Families with of People with Physical Disabilities Other Health/Disability Families
Program Short-Term Success
100% of families who wish to receive a memory box will receive their customized memory box and become aware of the free grief support groups in the area.
35% will come to the support groups (this information is provided in the memory box)
Program Long-Term Success  We would like to supply a memory box to 100% of our health care partners who do not have this service.
Program Success Monitored By  Therapist notes and self-reporting on the ability to cope with their grief and mental health conditions will be measured.  We would like to see 80% reported improvement in their ability to cope with grief due to this service.
Examples of Program Success  Due to the stages of grief, families are not likely to utilize counseling services.  They just lost their baby, they are not ready to talk about the loss.  However, most of the families who receive a memory box do follow up within the 6-9 month after loss.  It's shared with us that they often look at their memory box to look at the babies items, and they see the counseling service information thats inside the box.  Without the memory box, most families will not receive the much needed grief counseling.  The box keeps the connection to the families.
