Mission Statement

To provide free sailing lessons to the disabled and to wounded veterans in local areas.

Background Statement

Started in 1996 and operating twelve months per year. We have successfully taught hundreds of disabled sailors the skills needed to operate a small sailboat. 3 on the board and 31 volunteer skippers. No salaries drawn.

Impact Statement

Sailing Facsination was built on the principle that having a disability does not have to keep any person from enjoying time on the water aboard a sail boat!

Manned by a crew of two 30-year sailing veterans, including the Captain who is handicapped himself, Sailing Fascination’s desire is to increase the quality of life and bring hope and joy into the lives of those with disabilities.

At Sailing Fascination, we want each of our students to believe that their disability is only as limiting as their desires.

By providing free sailing lessons and increased access to Newport Harbor, individuals are able to build of self esteem through controlling a sail boat.

Needs Statement

$10,000 annually to cover insurance, repairs, licensing and maintenance fees that cover items not provided by our volunteer base.

CEO Statement

We have been blessed to ad the Special Olympic swim teams and the Wounded Warriors and their caregivers in the Orange County area.

Board Chair Statement

Every year we are faced with financial challanges. We have no trouble acquiring volunteers or students. The reality that everything is not free always has been a way of grounding us as an organization.

Sailing Lessons

Free sailing lessons to the disabled community in Orange County. With no prior experience needed, the Foundation teaches students everything from boat safety, sailing terminology and concepts, steering, tacking, running down-wind, crewing and perhaps most importantly, confidence-building.  Aboard the J-24 Fascination 2 berthed in Newport Harbor, students join the volunteer crew of two other sailors to head out to Newport Harbor for their 2-hour lesson. Capable students can go alone, or, with a caregiver if preferred. Because the lessons are limited to one or two students per lesson, training occurs at their pace and at their comfort level.

Program Short-Term Success
Students develop the enhanced self-esteem that comes from being in control of any apparatus. Most of our students have never been in charge of anything, much less a sailboat.
Program Long-Term Success

Operating entirely on the generosity of volunteers and in-kind contributions, Sailing Fascination has been bringing joy to, and building confidence in, children and adults with disabilities since 1996. Since then, more than 500 participants with a range of physical limitations have taken the course aboard the organization’s sailboat, Fascination2.

Program Success Monitored By  “The idea is that students are experienced boat drivers by the time they leave us,” Tom Tolbert, Director of Sailing Fascination explains. “The program is really about them spending time at the tiller, not just being a passenger.”  “The experience students get by being in control of a boat is amazing,” Tom says. “It’s a special treat. To look over and see a student smile while behind the tiller is an absolute thrill. I don’t think you can actually teach all of them everything about sailing, but their ability to problem-solve is dramatically enhanced. For once in their lives, these folks are in charge.”
