Overview

Mission Statement

Our mission is to provide affordable mental health care.  Living Success Center, Inc. is a non-profit counseling center dedicated to providing services to the community regardless of the ability to pay.

Background Statement

The Living Success Center provides counseling for people who cannot afford to pay private practice fees. For nineteen years the center has offered therapy by trained volunteers for children, families, couples, individuals. In addition to psychotherapy, we have parenting classes in English and Spanish, and groups for children.

Our mission is to provide affordable mental health care. It is our belief that people have a natural desire to improve the quality of their lives. When people want and need assistance to deal with their problems, concerns and aspirations, they should be able to get it via education, support, and psychological care without the sacrifice of dignity, privacy, or financial well being.

Our staff consists of 32 graduate students and interns who volunteer their time in order to gain the training to become Marriage and Family Therapists. All counseling is supervised by licensed Marriage and Family therapists. The Living Success Center provides training and experience for these new counselors.

Counseling services at our center are varied. We offer Sandplay Therapy, Couples and Family Counseling, as well as Groups for Parents and Sexual Abuse Survivors. The Living Success Center has joined with another agency, Pathways to Independence, to provide individual therapy for these young women who are being given a second chance to get their lives back on track.

Impact Statement

Living Success Center has created affordable counseling for all. No one is turned away for financial reasons.
  • The need for these services has increased greatly in the last few years because of the economic downturn. In 2011 4,686 counseling hours were logged. In 2012, 5,514 hours were logged, an increase of 18%.
  • To provide services for the increase in counseling the staff has been expanded to 32. We now have a culturally diverse staff with five Spanish-speaking counselors, as well as counselors who speak Vietnamese, Farsi, Arabic, Japanese and Russian.
  • Special groups were created for survivors of sexual abuse, Spanish speaking parents and families with eating disorders.

Needs Statement

We continually need to increase our number of counselors and supervisors to be able to provide services for the people who call us. Our program costs increase in order to hire more supervisors, print more forms and handouts to pay for additional administration expenses.

CEO Statement

Executive Director, Marianna Thomas, LMFT, would like you to see that the Living Success Center is growing. We are larger with 40 counseling interns and trainees and 3 AAMFT approved supervisors. We have more locations: Costa Mesa and Laguna Hills. We see more people: more calls come in every day for people looking for low-cost counseling.

The stress of living in a time of economic recession is felt by many of our clients. Hardships increase. Unemployment means loss of health benefits, loss of income, eventually loss of housing, and severe loss of positive self-esteem.
Sometimes people turn to alcohol and drugs to cope with the difficulties and the frustration. We, at Living Success Center, are screening our clients carefully to check for depression, anxiety, and the dependence on drugs and alcohol.
We also have an Anger Management Group and a Parenting Class.  Our latest group, Coping With Our Fears and Anxiety, will provide techniques and strategies to help people deal with the increase in violence in our world.

Board Chair Statement

During my association with Living Success Center, I continue to be impressed by the dedication and clinical skills of the therapists. They deal with critical issues and donate many hours to the disadvantaged people of Orange County who come to the Living Success Center.

CEO Email [email protected]
CEO Experience Marianna Thomas, Founder and Director,  became interested in community service while working as a Special Education Teacher at the Mardan Center. She went back to school to become a therapist so she could work with the families of the students. After graduating from Pepperdine University she became licensed as a Marriage and Family Therapist and started her practice 35 years ago at 445 E. 17th St. in Costa Mesa.

Providing affordable counseling for the community has always been a continuing ambition for Marianna. For over ten years she worked in shelters and counseling centers for victims of sexual abuse and domestic violence. She also provided leadership as Board Member and President of the Orange County chapter of the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists. In 2004 she was recognized at the state conference as Outstanding Chapter Leader for volunteering her services to the profession.

Twenty-three years ago, Marianna founded the Living Success Center so people could have low cost counseling. Students from nearby graduate schools volunteered their services while Marianna trained and supervised them. Today she is the Executive Director of a counseling staff of 32 while continuing to provide therapy in her private practice, still there at 445 17th St..
