Overview

Mission Statement

The mission of Breast Cancer Angels is to provide immediate direct financial and emotional assistance for individuals and their families as they are going through breast cancer treatment.
Breast Cancer Angels helps to address the ancillary needs of those who are currently in treatment. We provide food, supplies, gas, other day-to-day items, pro-bono legal services; along with medications, treatment costs and health insurance premiums. We also provide for costs associated with second opinions.

Background Statement

Breast Cancer Angels processes all donations regionally. The money raised in each community will go to help a family in that same community. When you donate to BCA, you are truly helping your neighbor.

A corporate sponsor pays our overhead. This enables us to use 100% of all donations to assist women in treatment.

We are currently helping 100 families every month, and our sponsors are vital to the success of our mission to help women undergoing breast cancer treatment. We thank you for your support!

Impact Statement

Breast Cancer Angels effectively serves as a provider, filling in the gap while they are going through treatment. Many of the individuals who come to us are already below poverty level and will forgo treatment in order to feed their families. We have assisted over $5.2 million in financial aid serving over 3,500 individuals.

This coming year we would like to be able to continue with our programs and extend the assistance to the individual that allows us to be able to give to them the entire time they are in treatment.

Needs Statement

  • Food, grocery store gift cards, clothing and gift cards (Household avg. is $250/month)
  • Utilities, phones, insurance & car payment,
  • Scholarships for youths affected by mothers' breast cancer
  • Medical co-pays and Cobra costs
  • Short-term home health care and final expenses
  • Social worker

Our annual expenditure on client needs is now over $400,000. Monthly, we assist 50+ women who are long term clients and another 45-60 women who need our assistance on an emergency basis. Sadly, at least 14 of the women we assist each year lose their battle to breast cancer. During these times we continue to assist even when hospice is called in.

CEO Statement

Faye Dietiker is a breast cancer survivor herself and while in treatment back in 1999 she saw a need to help other women who were not as fortunate as herself. Her passion and empathy for others is how this organization began.
After 17 years she retired, leaving the organization in the hands of Debbie Stroman who is overseeing the daily activities and we are currently helping over 120 individuals a month with assistance. Debbie has the same dedication Faye has and is making sure that Faye's legacy will continue on for many more years.

Board Chair Statement

I am a current Board member of the Breast Cancer Angels ("BCA.") I came into contact with BCA in 2000 when my son's nanny (Ignacia) was diagnosed and undergoing treatment. I was a single mom and Ignacia and her son Johnny were truly part of my family. We struggled during this period as I took off work to help care for her. At the time my son was 12 years old and her son was eight years old. BCA helped our little family with emergency aid and I knew then that one day I would give back to this amazing organization. With the lowest red tape possible our organization provides emergency food, gas, co-pay/prescription and rental assistance. After going back to school and passing the California Bar, I founded the pro bono legal program for the organization in 2007 and help women in treatment with end of life decision making including nomination of guardianship for minor children and advanced health care directives.

In the last three years we have seen the need for emergency aid increase dramatically. In addition to the hardship that women in treatment for breast cancer endure, many of these women hover at or below the poverty line even prior to diagnosis. Many of our clients are single mothers some as young as 27 years old. We also have elderly clients who simply must chose between their prescribed cancer medications and food. Homelessness is also a huge area of concern and we do our best to help patients and their families find safe shelter.

As the need for emergency aid is increasing the corresponding need for funding is also at an all time high. Our mission is to give back in the communities where the funds are raised. When dollars are raised from a certain county, we target those dollars to go back out to the community they were raised from. In addition to general donations and grants. we have monthly donors who are our Angels. 100% of Angel dues collected go directly out to aid our clients in treatment for breast cancer with the basic necessities of life. Aid in areas like San Diego and Los Angeles have been on the rise in recent months, partly because of the closure of other resources like Breast Cancer Solutions.

We, who are thankful to have food to put on our tables, gas to go to the doctors and money to pay for medicine, cannot forget to help those who are less fortunate. It is from the grace of individuals and corporate donors that BCA is able to help over 100 families per month with the gift of groceries, gas, medicine and housing assistance.

Clients are referred to us from oncologists and hospitals. From the graciousness of esteemed health providers like Dr. John Link of Breastlink, BCA has also been able to provide second opinion appointments. However more funding is needed to expand these type of services.   It is our goal to allow women to live with dignity and help where we can.

We have been actively recruiting Angel donors and continue to fundraise in the communities with the heaviest need. Breast Cancer Angels was founded by Faye Dietiker from the kindness and generosity of her heart. It is an extremely worthwhile organization and I am a testament to how this organization operates. It is a circle of care.

Client Testimonial:

Dear Angels,
Thank you very much for your generous gift. With the added expenses of co-pays, making ends meet has been difficult. Because of your gift I have been able to make payments on my utility bills. I was able to renew my license and car insurance instead of driving to my appointments without either of these items. None of this would be possible without your support and for that I am grateful. Again thank you so much for your generosity.”
