Overview

Mission Statement

Standup for the Cure is building a supportive, compassionate community, promoting and active, healthy lifestyle and raising money to help underprivileged women access breast health services. Every $125 we raise will enable access to breast cancer screening and may save a life.  Our events occur in a festival atmosphere with music, food and activities with complimentary clinical breast cancer and melanoma screenings and counseling.

Background Statement

Standup paddling is one of the fastest growing sports worldwide, especially for women.  Women have a 1 in 8 chance of breast cancer and so access to mammography is critically important. If caught early, Breast Cancer has a 95% survival rate. Standup for the Cure uses paddling as a conduit for engaging families, introducing an active, healthy lifestyle and educating about the importance of early detection. We are committed to enabling underprivileged women and men to have access to mammography, so Standup for the Cure was born to raise awareness and raise funds for cancer screening  while introducing participants to this fabulous new sport.  Paddling  is ideal for post breast surgery rehabilitation, fitness and strength training.

Impact Statement

To date we have raised over $1,300,000 to fund local breast cancer screening services and screened over 1800 on site at events for breast cancer and melanoma at no cost to the participant.  We've engaged over 10,000 participants and hope to increase our impact for years to come.

Needs Statement

1. To raise funds to support Community Breast Cancer programs
2. To raise awareness of the importance of early detection of breast cancer
3. To introduce people to the wonderful sport of Standup Paddling
4. We would love to have more sponsors join our event and participate in the expo
5. We need volunteers to help us fundraise and raise awareness all year round
**Our hard costs are paid through sponsorship so that 100% of our donations and registration fees can be directed toward breast cancer screening

CEO Statement

Our Founder, Judie Vivian,  was diagnosed with breast cancer in May 2010 and realized how fortunate she was to have access to mammography - it saved her life.  Now the non-profit she founded is dedicated to enable all women have that same access.

Board Chair Statement

Our biggest challenge is to make these events fun and inspirational while raising money using volunteers to keep the costs to a minimum.  Sponsors and supporters are critically important to achieve this so that all moneys donated are able to be passed through to the community..

Other Ways to Donate/Volunteer

Donate by mailing a check or in-kind by donating SUP equipment and related prizes.  All proceeds go to Susan G. Komen OC to help uninsured women receive breast healthcare.Volunteers to help organize the Annual Standup Paddling event on May 3rd and to run the Silent Auction will be greatly appreciated.  Typically 1,000 people attend the paddling event . We would also love to have volunteers to help with Social Media all year round to raise awareness of the importance of early detection of breast cancer and to fundraise for Susan G Komen OC.
