Background Statement

In 2009, while Gabriella Romani was volunteering at Shea Center Therapeutic Horseback Riding, an equine center in Southern California, helping children with special needs through therapy involving horses, she was stirred with the seed idea for Big Blue Marble. She had participated for years in Earth Day events and beach clean-up campaigns in Northern California. She was deeply concerned about the conditions around the world that made it into the news or online. Once inspired, she began researching, reading and meeting others dedicated to causes conserving the planet.

From years of reading with her children and now her grandchildren, Gabriella knew the value of books in a child's life. She began telling stories of helping endangered species – in the form of charming books with kids as characters, wildlife as characters, simple interactions, facts, and “To Do” steps that if carried out a large scale, would make a difference in preserving disappearing habitats. Each book presents an issue in a gentle, positive light, honoring children’s innocence.

Dedicated to her vision, Gabriella used her savings – and recruited others to help and to donate – to launch Big Blue Marble. In 2012, Gabriella founded Big Blue Marble as a 501(c) nonprofit organization to address a pressing need of the times – preparing our children and youth to care about and take responsibility for the conservation of the planet.

Each book lists resources for children’s exploration – organizations dedicated to that cause. To date, 200 organizations provided feedback on our books and endorsed Big Blue Marble. Our programs let kids know they make a difference! They offer ways for families or classrooms to support causes. They seed possible career paths.

Needs Statement

Big Blue Marble addresses the pressing need for leaders today to invest in setting right, protecting and conserving the precious resources and invaluable species of our planet for our children, by teaching our children today to become the leaders of tomorrow in restoring our planet.

Big Blue Marble’s most pressing needs are, as follows:
#1) Four dedicated new Board members, with capacity to ‘give & get’, and civic influence;

#2) Successful outreach into, negotiation with, and revenue for, the educational system to provide our Caring Kids™ program in schools, i.e., place our books in approximately 18 classrooms of 30 students, or approximately 540 students, this year, with children receiving a book of their own to take home, the program totaling $10,974, or $20.32 per student (which includes the book, retailing at $15);

#3) Revenue to cover projected 2014-2015 publication costs for the The Oceans Trilogy book series, $44,237;

#4) Revenue to engage research on the impact of the Caring Kids™ program beyond our survey evaluation tool, estimated at $10,000; and

#5) Revenue to cover Caring Kids™ programs beyond this year, into approximately 10 similarly sized programs in Orange County or adjacent counties, or approximately $109,740.

CEO Statement

We have created light-hearted, engaging children’s books providing information on concerns and causes today, and actions to take to address these issues. Each book opens children minds to caring and taking action to help.

Our Save Coins for Causes®, Let’s Make a Difference series highlights endangered species and resources. To date: We Can Help Orangutans and We Can Help Protect Mountain Gorillas

Our States Symbols series celebrates the people, nature and way of life of one of our United States at a time. To date: We Love California! and in planning: We Love Indiana! As stated on the book's cover, Big Blue Marble will donate a percent of sales to that state’s foodbanks to help create a future where no child goes hungry.

Giving children the opportunity to give small donations at an early age instills caring and taking responsibility for their world. Children grow up empowered with the knowledge that they can be a productive part of solving our challenges.

Our educational programs and hands-on activities give children knowledge about sustainability, increase awareness of philanthropy, and provide opportunities to be part of local and world organizations. The books and activities help develop children’s self-esteem and social skills, as well as provide a means to create positive change in their world. Recent research has indicated that helping others may be a key to a happier life.

Many parents today struggle to find ways to teach their children the importance of giving to charity. Yet many children feel a strong desire to help create positive change.

Marcheline Bertrand, the mother of Angelina Jolie, taught her at an early age to care about, and to give to, those less fortunate. Today Angelina Jolie is a philanthropist of note. Children can learn the same principles through Big Blue Marble programs like Save Coins for Causes®, Let’s Make a Difference; Kids With Coins®, and Caring Kids™.

Programs

Caring Kids™ Program

Big Blue Marble's Caring Kids™ program provides a book from our Save Coins for Causes®, Let's Make a Difference book series on endangered species/environment, to students in low-income schools both in local communities and worldwide.

Most recently, in June 2015, Big Blue Marble partnered with NOAA for an event with kindergarteners from Adams Elementary School in Santa Barbara, CA. The young students (mostly under served) participated in a week dedicated to learning about the ocean. They learned about marine science, ocean ecosystems, marine animals and more! The kindergarteners also got involved in hands-on watershed activities along with a beach cleanup. They turned the trash collected from the beach cleanup into an art project. Ocean week concluded with a NOAA staff person coming into each of the kindergarten classrooms and reading Big Blue Marble's Let's Make a Difference: Learning About Our Ocean book. The Learning About Our Ocean book was used as a learning tool to highlight the importance of ocean ecosystem health and how everyone can be involved in making positive changes towards protecting our oceans. Big Blue Marble donated a book to each kindergartener and to each classroom that participated in the event. We hope the book will continue to encourage students to learn more about the ocean and inspire them to get involved with preservation efforts.

Big Blue Marble is thankful for opportunities to serve the future caretakers of our planet! We look forward to partnering up with other school districts and organizations for future events and educational programs.

Budget  $5,000.00
Category  Education, General/Other Elementary & Secondary Education
Population Served Children Only (5 - 14 years) Families Poor,Economically Disadvantaged,Indigent
Program Short-Term Success

By the end of the Caring Kids™ program presented in a school or club group, children ages 5-10 will display, as follows:
- increased consideration and caring attitudes toward others and toward a group project that the group or leader has chosen and completed,
- increased interest in caring and taking actions toward effecting a positive cause, and
- repeated interest in hearing about, reading about, the Big Blue Marble book or its cause or similar causes,
as observed by the adult leader (parent, teacher or club leader) and recorded on the Big Blue Marble self-report survey returned to the school or club which distributed the books.

Program Long-Term Success

Big Blue Marble's Caring Kids™ program supports outcomes displaying as follows:

- today’s children growing up with an interest in, dedication to, and participation in supporting the environment, environmental causes and sustainable living;

- today’s children choosing careers and lifestyles that support the environment, environmental causes and sustainable living;

- today’s children growing up reflecting positive self-esteem, leadership, and attitudes and actions that make a difference to conditions beyond their own lives; and

- today’s children growing up supporting philanthropy.

Program Success Monitored By

Caring Kids™ program monitoring relies on surveys completed by parents, teachers or club leaders. An initial survey evaluation of the children’s response to the book is folded and enclosed with each book. It provides for a place where the adult observer may give his/her name and address to receive a follow-up survey from Big Blue Marble within 6 months. A second survey is then sent to the adult observer, inquiring about children’s lasting interest in the book, continued interest in helping environmental causes, and continued display of increased social skills that the adult observer may attribute to exposure to the Big Blue Marble book. An envelope for the return of the second survey to Big Blue Marble is provided. Copies of evaluations, available on request. Further development of evaluation is of interest to Big Blue Marble.

Examples of Program Success

Anecdotal reports of the impact of Big Blue Marble books include the following:

- "My granddaughters love the animal characters in the Orangutan and Mountain Gorilla books. They want to spend more time with them in re-reading the books. They ask me, Are we using the right palm oil? They want to go back to the zoo. They have shown a kind interest in other animals around the neighborhood."

- "After reading the book to my special ed class, the class drew pictures of the gorilla, and wanted to help the gorillas. The special ed class practiced pronouncing these new words. The children were engrossed while drawing their pictures and seemed to feel it more personally and thoughtfully than other children’s books."

We will publish statistics and volume of reports, as they become available.
