Mission Statement

Junior Achievement's (JA) mission is to inspire and prepare young people to succeed in a global economy.

Background Statement

JA is the nation's largest, volunteer-driven nonprofit that provides students, grades K-12, with financial literacy, work-readiness, and entrepreneurship education.
 
JA was founded in 1919 by Horace Moses, President of Strathmore Paper Company, Theodore Vail, President of AT&T, and Senator Murray Crane of Massachusetts. Its first program, JA Company Program®, was offered to high school students on an after-school basis. In 1975, the organization entered the classroom with the introduction of Project Business for the middle grades. Over the last 43 years, JA has expanded its activities and broadened its scope to include in-school and after-school students, K-12.
 
Founded locally in Orange County in 1954, JA of Orange County has a successful track record of impacting students of all socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds. During the 2017-2018 school year, JA of Orange County served over 12,000 students in grades K-12 throughout Orange County, with the assistance of over 550 community volunteers.

Impact Statement

During the 2017-2018 school year, JA of Orange County served over 12,000 students in kindergarten through 12th grade throughout Orange County, with the assistance of over 500 community volunteers.

JA of Orange County implemented 74 percent of its programming last year in high-needs, under-served areas of the Anaheim City School District and Santa Ana Unified School District.

JA of Orange County held its most successful Stock Market Championship event ever on October 19, 2017. This unique event brings business professionals from around Orange County together for a night of food, drink, fun and friendly investment competition while supporting financial literacy education in Orange County. Starting with $500,000 in fictitious stock, teams of 4 compete against one another to see who can earn the highest return on investment and highest net worth. JAOC’s annual fundraiser was attended by over 150 guests and raised over $135,000.


Needs Statement

According to an article in TIME magazine and an Ohio State University study,young adults are increasing their credit card debt at a more rapid rate than other age groups, and they're slower at paying it off. JA of Orange County's goal is to start early, focus on elementary, middle grade, and high school students and provide these youth with JA's financial literacy education programs that will give them the tools to succeed in the future.
 
The significant gap between high-performing and low-performing schools disproportionately impacts low-income Latino students within Orange County, according to the recent OC Workforce Indicator report. In fact, Latinos represent 75 percent of the students who drop out of high school in Orange County. In the Anaheim school districts and Santa Ana Unified School District, high-need areas in North Orange County where JA of Orange County implemented 74 percent of its programming last year, 86 percent of students are considered under-served (meaning they were enrolled in the free/reduced price meal program during the 2016-2017 academic year).
 
JA will inspire and empower Orange County students by giving them the tools to own their economic success and stay in school through JA's vital economic and financial literacy education programs.

Thoroughly trained and supported by JA staff, every volunteer receives a prepared kit, which includes a step-by-step volunteer handbook that guides the volunteer through each lesson and includes timing sequences, key age-appropriate vocabulary and teaching hints. Volunteers play an integral role in making JA programs a success. By sharing your personal and work experience with students, volunteers bring real-world relevance, bridging the gap between school and the business world. There are many volunteer opportunities available from one-day commitments at the elementary level such as JA Days, hosting a Job Shadow at your work place, to one-hour weekly commitments at the middle or high school level. Programs


Economic and Financial Literacy Education

Through interactive, educational programs, Junior Achievement’s (JA) curriculum is built around three core pillars: entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and work-readiness. JA's volunteer delivered programs bridge academic content and real-world experiences, establishing a core foundation of skills while inspiring students to dream about their futures. JA programs help prepare youth in kindergarten through 12th grade for the real world by showing them how to recognize the economic relevance of excelling in school, creating jobs which make their communities more robust, applying entrepreneurial thinking to the workplace, and to generate and effectively manage wealth.
 
Embodying the heart of JA, volunteers from the community serve as instructors for JA programs, sharing their personal and work experience with the students, bringing real-world relevance to the material and bridging the gap between education and the business world. Thoroughly trained by JA staff, every volunteer receives a prepared program kit, which includes a step-by-step volunteer guidebook that guides the volunteer through each program lesson and corresponding activity, including timing sequences, key age-appropriate vocabulary, and teaching hints. Volunteers are then connected with their teachers to begin teaching per a previously agreed upon schedule

Program Short-Term Success 
It is JA's goal to create opportunities where students will gain the knowledge, tools, and inspiration to become
successful in their career and personal lives. This is accomplished by creating the opportunity for a meaningful
exchange between volunteers and students, providing enrichment to the curriculum that schools are implementing
at each grade level, and by helping students develop positive attitudes about money, entrepreneurship, career
planning, and education.
 
JA’s elementary school programs are the foundation of its K-12 curricula. Six sequential themes, each with five hands-on activities, as well as an after-school and capstone experience, work to change students’ lives by helping them understand business and economics. The middle grades programs help young teens make difficult decisions about how to best prepare for their educational and professional future and develop communication skills that are essential to success in the business world. JA’s high school programs help students make informed, intelligent decisions about their future, and foster skills that will be highly useful in the business world. 
 
Program Long-Term Success 
 JA’s unique delivery gives students the support necessary to bolster their chances for life success. According to evaluation reports from the Worldwide Institute for Research and Evaluation (WIRE), 79 percent of JA students agreed that JA positively influenced their attitudes toward continuing their education, and 69 percent of high school students indicated that the things they learned during JA programs would help them get a good job.
 
Through a community-based network of volunteer role models, educators, and businesses, JA strives to improve the quality of lives for all students by providing them with the economic and financial knowledge needed to transition into adulthood and make their dreams a reality. By providing interactive educational programs, JA helps to ensure that students have access to critical financial and work-readiness knowledge needed to successfully participate in our global economy.
 
Program Success Monitored By 
JA of Orange County monitors and supports the successful program outcomes by maintaining communication with
the teachers and volunteers involved to ensure effective and impactful program delivery in each of the classrooms
involved.
 
JA is committed to conducting regular evaluations of the efficacy of its programs, as well as the short and long-term
benefits associated with student participation. To ensure value and relevancy, JA commissions evaluation reports
from the Worldwide Institute for Research and Evaluation [WIRE]. The evaluations, completed in a controlled
environment, are done at the national level and follow strict educational research guidelines that measure the
impact of JA programs on key variables including: knowledge of key concepts, confidence in completing key
financial tasks, and the application of skills associated with program content. In the past five years, 96 percent of
all JA programs have been evaluated, totaling more than 60 evaluation studies. JA is committed to building upon
the evaluations of program content to expand and to provide longer lasting program deliverables, as well as the
short and long-term benefits associated with student participation. 
Examples of Program Success 
The majority of JA students (79 percent) agreed that JA positively influenced their attitudes toward continuing their education, according to evaluation reports from the WIRE.
 
Teachers (95%) and volunteers (92%) report that students who participate in JA have a better understanding of how the real world operates.
 
The majority of middle school students (71%) reported that JA helped them recognize the importance of education and motivated them to work harder to achieve educational and work goals.
 
JA students were more likely than students in general to matriculate to college immediately after high school (77% versus 69%).

Ms. Christine Shewbridge Regional Executive Director

 

Christine Shewbridge is the Regional Executive Director for Junior Achievement of Southern California. Christine joined Junior Achievement in June 1994 and has served in every major position within the Orange County office and is currently overseeing Orange, Kern, Kings, & Tulare counties. She also oversaw the Inland Empire until 2007. Her career began in New York with Pan American World Airways in 1977 until its bankruptcy in 1991. She has extensive experience in fund raising, event planning, client relations, sales, and marketing.

Ms. Shewbridge has been involved with the SBA Awards Luncheon Committee for Orange County & The Inland Empire for the past 20 years. She is also a member of Women Leaders Connect, formerly known as Business Women Rising since 2010. In 2018, she joined the Board of Kinetic Academy, a charter school located in Huntington Beach.

Junior Achievement of Orange County received the Future Financiers Allan R. Owens “Mission Accomplished” Award in 2017, Outstanding Partnership Award from the Santa Ana Unified School District in 2014, the Service Enterprise Certification for California Volunteers, Office of the Governor certified by point of Lights in 2013, and Outstanding Contributions to Education award in 2011 from the Orange County Department of Education under her leadership. In June of 2004, she was nominated Volunteer of the Year for Vital Link and served as a member of the Board of Directors for Vital Link for 12 years. She was also distinguished as a Partner in Education in 2002 with the Santa Ana Unified School District.

She received her degree from Suffolk Community College in Long Island, NY. She completed the United Way’s Multi Ethnic Leadership Academy in May 2003, and is the recipient of eight Junior Achievement Summit Awards.
