Overview

Mission Statement

"Inspiring young artists with creativity, friendship and a passion for performing." The Yorba Linda Spotlight Theater Company is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing performing arts education and performance opportunities to the aspiring artists of Orange County and surrounding areas. Our mission is to provide a welcoming, fun and positive experience for all of our participants and produce high quality performances with professional technical elements. Besides our full-scale musicals, we also offer classes in Musical Theatre, Dance, Drama, Voice and Piano.

Background Statement

Yorba Linda Spotlight Theater Company was founded in 2003 with the goal of providing quality arts education to the aspiring young artists of Orange County. For 15 years Yorba Linda Spotlight has offered a wide array of opportunities to performers and has seen students excel at prestigious performing arts high schools and universities.

Impact Statement

Our organization has an immeasurable impact on the lives of our young artists. Our main accomplishment over the past year was implementing the production and design enrichment program through which teenagers interested in the technical side of the theater have been able to grow their skills. We've also successfully produced 4 full-scale musical productions, some of which are rarely produced in youth theater, provided exciting class programs to fit the needs of performers of all skill levels, and launched a minis program to cultivate confidence, listening and performance skills in children as young as 2 years old. We are excited for the coming year during which we plan to continue to grow these programs as well as add some exciting new classes aimed at helping performers build upon their skills and explore their creativity.

Needs Statement

Yorba Linda Spotlight relies on the generosity of our community to provide high quality education to our students. Currently we are desperately in need of new sound equipment so the audience doesn't miss a second of our fabulous performers. We are also on a fundraising drive to purchase some portable ballet bars and studio software.

CEO Statement

Yorba Linda Spotlight Theater Company is in the business of changing lives. We have had thousands of students come through our doors to participate in a variety of different activities and our hope is that their lives were changed for the better in some way. The arts are a very powerful vehicle for expression, passion, creativity and well-roundedness. As we see arts programs slowly being taken away in our public schools, Yorba Linda Spotlight Theater Company provides an artistic outlet for so many children in Orange County. Our staff understands the importance of expressive art and how it can impact our students. We are excited to offer such a variety of classes and opportunities for young aspiring artists. Spotlight is not only for the seasoned actor/actress, but can offer a wealth of beginner level techniques and performance opportunities for students who have never been onstage.

Although we strive to provide the best instruction in technique and theatrical professionalism, we truly care about the experience our students have while under our direction. Sharing a common interest with a room full people can be powerful. Having the ability to socialize and collaborate with other students who love theater arts is incredibly rewarding. And there is nothing more lasting than the friendships made along the way.

Yorba Linda Spotlight Theater Company prides itself in knowing it has provided all of these to it’s students. We hope to continue to offer a safe, enriching environment in which students are able to challenge themselves, flourish and grow while making life-long memories.

Programs

Production and Design Education Enrichment Program

This program offers young artists the opportunity to broaden their horizons and expand their theatrical knowledge in the areas of set design, costume design, prop construction, wig and hair design, makeup design and technical theater. There are numerous youth and community theaters in Orange County that offer competitive training and opportunities in the areas of dance, voice, acting and musical theater. However, we believe that expanding training and education into the technical production and design area of theater is a niche that has yet to be filled in our surrounding area. The Production and Design Education Enrichment Program will help to create a well-rounded theater expert who will gain the knowledge of a "behind the scenes" professional. We feel it is important to help students and community members have access to the technical training and production and design side of theater as well as the onstage performance aspect in an caring and nurturing environment.
Budget  $20,000.00
Category  Education, General/Other Extracurricular Arts & Culture
Population Served Adolescents Only (13-19 years)
Program Short-Term Success  Participants will be able to understand the areas of set design, costume design, prop construction, wig and hair design, makeup design and technical theater on an introductory/intermediate level. They will gain knowledge and insight into what it takes to become successful in the area of technical theater. Participants will become confident in creating a set design, costume design, hair/wig design for a theatrical production and will have understanding of the positions and responsibilities of technical crew members. And lastly, they will gain appreciation for the technical aspect of theater and a mastery of skills that will assist in finding a job in the line of technical theater arts.
Program Long-Term Success  The long term goal of this program is to inspire young adults to pursue a career in technical theater by giving them exposure to all of the behind-the-scenes roles involved in theatrical production.
Program Success Monitored By

We will measure program success by evaluating how many students are able to participate and also by how many resources we are able to access to provide them with the best education in this area.
