Background Statement

The idea for the Performing Students Competition Team Incorporated came from the dancers.  Several years ago, a number of dancers were concerned about children who didn't have the same opportunities that they did.  The students began fundraising to provide scholarships but was limited since the group was not a non-profit.  Determined to expand their fundraising activities, a small group of parents formed the non-profit and are working to increase the reach of non-profit by bringing the joy of dance to children.

Programs

Joyful Hearts

Joyful Hearts is a program that not only consists of dance classes but of lifelong experiences and lessons.  Scholarship dancers are integrated into various dance classes where they are challenged with motor skill development, technique, and discipline.  Dancers are encouraged to help each other which also builds teamwork, relationships and social skills.  Performances throughout the year, teach the students to rely on each other in their dance numbers as well as in preparation for the performance (e.g. hair styling).  Lastly, through hard work and dedication, the dancers learn to respect themselves as well as their peers.
Budget  $4,000.00
Category  Arts, Culture & Humanities, General/Other Dance
Population Served Children and Youth (0 - 19 years) Other Health/Disability Poor,Economically Disadvantaged,Indigent
Program Short-Term Success  After a year of dance instruction, dancers will have taken 52 classes and performed up to 5 times in front of audiences ranging from 25 to 500 people.  Dancers will learn music appreciation and rhythm as they develop life long exercise and healthy eating habits.
Program Long-Term Success  For disadvantaged and special needs children, 90% will become more confident and successful as adults.  Dance instruction teaches children structure, health, and coordination while dance performance teaches confidence, stage presence, and teamwork.  In addition, the sense of belonging and community gives many of these children a safe and nurturing environment to grow up in.  They bond with each other regardless of social and financial stature and develop lifelong relationships that often times keep them off the streets.
Program Success Monitored By  Success of our program is evident in the year ending performance at the Orange County Fair when the dancers perform for up to 500 people.  They are confident in the execution of their dance technique and their body movement.
Examples of Program Success  Maria (named changed) began dancing at the age of 11.  She comes from a family of 13 children and is often called upon to take care of her siblings.  The dance scholarship she received paid for her dance instruction, costumes, and dance accessories (e.g. shoes, tights).  Maria was a quiet girl when she began dance classes.  Dance opened up a new world for her and she became more outgoing and confident.  Maria's body image became more positive and she began to respect herself and her abilities.  As a result, Maria tried out for and made her High School Cheer Leading Team as a freshman.
