This chapter of Greyhound Pets of America was founded in 1995 and in 2011 changed our name to FastFriends Greyhound Adoption. Our goal is  to service the Southern California Area and find homes for the greyhounds that are the byproducts of the dog racing industry. This organization is dedicated to rescuing greyhounds that no longer qualify to race and finding them responsible homes as pets. It is also dedicated to improving the welfare of those greyhounds that are still racing. The dogs taken first from the track are those in immediate danger, the sick and injured ones. We provide the best in medical care for all the greyhounds and none are ever put down. Many of these greyhounds go on to become therapy dogs and enhance the lives of others .

Background Statement

We operated since 1995 as Greyhound Pets of America. In 2011 we had a name change to FastFriends Greyhound Adoption of California, Inc. Our goal of rescuing greyhound dogs from the track has remained unchanged.

Impact Statement

FastFriends has brought up and placed close to 4000 dogs from the Caliente Race track in Tijuana, Mexico.

Needs Statement

Our most pressing need is for funds to pay our veterinary expenses. All dogs from the track are spayed/neutered, have their teeth cleaned and are given rabies and preventative vaccines. Additionally we take dogs with broken legs and medical problems. Normally these dogs cost between $4500 and $5500 to surgically repair a broken leg. We treat one to two of these dogs each month. Our organization has no employees and pays no wages. All funds are used to benefit the dogs.

Programs

Greyhound Adoption Program

The operating program for this chapter is to find as many responsible homes for greyhounds as possible and improving the welfare of those still racing. This is accomplished by continual education of the desirability of greyhounds as pets, by screening potential adopters, our foster program for greyhounds awaiting adoption, the medical care given to the dogs in our care, the support of the adopters to ensure the success of the adoption, and a contract that requires that any greyhound, placed by us, must be returned to us if the owner no longer can keep the greyhound.
Budget  $159,929.00
Category  Animal-Related, General/Other Animal Protection & Welfare
Population Served US
Program Short-Term Success  Support pet kennels at the race track.
Program Long-Term Success  Adopted over 1,000 greyhounds, including 44 with broken legs and continued our support of the pet kennel at the track so the greyhounds have a safe place to go when finished racing.
Program Success Monitored By  Our success is monitored by the number of greyhounds we rescue each year.
