Through educational programming, which includes workshops in dance, music, art, and literacy, it promotes understanding and appreciation of the contributions of the many cultures in our region by sharing knowledge of Mexico's rich cultural, and educational, and social legacy.

Mission Statement

El Centro Cultural de Mexico is an alternative space in Santa Ana where the community can find cultural, educational, and artistic activities that strengthen their identities, develop their talents and develop a sense of leadership in their community. By engaging Orange County residents and communities through community outreach efforts, it supports inter and intra-cultural interaction and dialogue among Orange County's residents by creating a variety of programs which enables all people to explore their own heritage and culture. Through educational programming, which includes workshops in dance, music, art, and literacy, it promotes understanding and appreciation of the contributions of the many cultures in our region by sharing knowledge of Mexico's rich cultural, and educational, and social legacy.

Background Statement

Promoting an understanding and awareness of the Mexican culture, history, arts and traditions to develop participation and enjoyment in them and to strengthen cultural identities, develop talents, and foster a sense of leadership within the local community. 


Impact Statement

Centro has a positive track record of helping build community based leadership and local coalitions, supporting low income resident-led efforts in Santa Ana, California since 1994. This includes our 15 classes, and three major community based cultural events for over 40,000 participants and training organizers, incubating other community based organizations, and leveraging community power to open up space and opportunities for resident participation, both increasing civic engagement and developing new policies for the planning processes.

The city is one of the youngest in the country, with spending on students is less than the state average.  Santa Ana has been chose by the California Endowment as one of fourteen communities with great need with the potential for the greatest transformation.

El Centro ogranizes community by allowing local community members to teach classes for free. In the this project members are nurtured and support to create a class and curriculum that support their culture.

CEO Experience Luis Alberto Sarmiento would be tracking the project. He was born in Mexico DF but has extensive experience working in community development and organizing in Santa Ana and Mexico in various capacities. Luis Alberto is trained in community organizing, public media, and helped bring together SACReD and win the Sunshine Ordinance, and the Wellness District. He is the founder of Radio Santa Ana, a community based radio and media project. Through the University of California, Berkeley, Luis Alberto worked with the San Francisco Day Labor Program, organizing day laborers on street corners and led an anti-gentrification campaign in the Mission District, through the Mission Anti-Displacement Coalition. Luis Alberto also has experience in responsible and community development working with the Little Tokyo Service Center, linking community organizing, capacity building, and urban planning. Luis Alberto was the lead organizer for Latino Health Access and helped pass the Sunshine Ordinance in Santa Ana, California. He has a BA in Sociology from the University of California, Irvine and has worked on research with Prof. Victoria Beard on transnational communities.
