Background Statement

A California nonprofit since 2001, Laguna Beach Live! strives to bring professional music at its most exciting, up close and personal, to the community of Laguna Beach. Dedicated to artistic excellence and innovation, Laguna Beach Live! presents free chamber music concerts year- round at the Laguna Art Museum, a weeklong Music Festival in February, special fall and spring concerts, an outdoor Summer Jazz series and an indoor Winter Jazz series. Education and community are at the heart of our organization. We offer  a "Live! Music & Kids" education program for children along with free daytime concerts at the local senior center.

Trustees: Cody Engle; Sam Goldstein; Joe Hanauer; Judith Jelinek; Betsy Jenkins; Rick Malcolm, Elizabeth Pearson; Lucinda Prewitt, Carol Reynolds, and Rob Schlesinger.

Impact Statement

Laguna Beach Live has grown tremendously since it began in 2001. We present over 30 concerts a year, many are free or at low ticket prices, and we serve over 5000 people. We bring professional musicians for free outreach classes at the Laguna Beach Schools and the Laguna Beach Boys & Girls Club. During the annual Music Festival that is presented in partnership with the Philharmonic Society of Orange County, we offer in-school performances from festival artists, after-school workshops, interactive meet-the-artist events, provided discounted Festival tickets and youth volunteer opportunities.

For seniors, Laguna Beach Live! offers quality music at intimate venues throughout the city, throughout the year, at discounted prices, including our annual free concert at Susi Q Senior Center.

Our newest Community Education project, Live! Music Insights, is a discussion and demonstration of essential music elements, increasing music appreciation in an entertaining way.

Our goals for the upcoming year include continuing our education programs, bringing new concerts to Laguna Beach, and increasing our number of members.

Needs Statement

Sponsorship is needed:
1. Live! Music & Kids Program. We would like to increase the number of visits to the local schools and Boys & Girls Club and provide an array of talent to help the children see all aspects of music.
2. Financially we seek to keep the cost of attendance at a minimum, requiring donor support to help offset the expenses.

CEO Statement

We are pleased to bring high quality music that is accessible...intimate settings and affordable ticket prices and to offer a number of free programs to our children and seniors.

Donations at all levels make up the difference of paying musicians a suitable fee and of presenting as many concerts as possible in a broad range of genres.

Programs

Live! Music & Kids

Beginning in 2013, Live! Music & Kids is an education outreach project to promote the appreciation of music by presenting musical performances and hands-on demonstrations in all public schools within Laguna Beach and at the Boys & Girls Club of Laguna Beach. With many arts programs and after-school activities being cut, Live! Music & Kids offers a valuable addition to students’ musical and cultural experience, through the introduction of new instruments, genres, and visiting musicians. While our primary goal is music education, studies show that students given guided musical instruction for an hour or two a week show great improvements is cognitive and social skills. This ties in well with the core belief of the club, to provide “life-enhancing programs and character development experiences” to their students.

Our past events in the schools and Boys and Girls Club include bringing a classical guitarist to the high school's guitar class, mentoring the strings class at the middle school by our director of education Sara Warner, funding a professional cellist for a workshop offered to cello students, and purchasing shoulder rests for middle school violinists, which helped to improve their technique.

Our collaboration with Boys & Girls Clubs has allowed us to bring the joy of music to youth in our community, many who have never experienced that joy before.

Budget  $8,500
Category  Arts, Culture & Humanities, General/Other Music
Population Served Children and Youth (0 - 19 years)
Program Short-Term Success

Studies have shown that youth given guided musical instruction for 1 to 2 hours a week show measurable improvements in cognitive and social skills. We believe the arts are an essential part of the growth and vitality of the human spirit. We believe that music and the entertainment it provides enriches our lives and enhances our quality of life.

Program Long-Term Success

Our year-round youth education programs give students the opportunity to connect to the joy and creativity of music, critical to their academic, social and emotional growth. By introducing youth to music, we are building future audiences and encouraging students to pursue music as a hobby or profession. Our programs promote music appreciation, encourage the joy of listening to and making music, builds educated arts audiences, and is making a positive economic impact in the community.

Program Success Monitored By

In June 2014 Laguna Beach Live! conducted a survey of students and staff at the Boys & Girls Club to measure the effectiveness and impact of the Live! Music & Kids program. We inquired of the participating children about their favorite activities, their attitudes about attending live musical performances, their likelihood of taking music lessons, and whether the experience made them wish to explore different types of music. We measured by simple diagrams any changes in their emotional well-being before and after experiencing music class. We surveyed Club staff about their observations of the children's responses to music classes and any noted behavioral changes and anecdotal data.

Examples of Program Success

Quotes from some of the students prove the popularity of this program:

“I like the music every week- it is very exciting!”

“I play the guitar and drums. I enjoyed the rhythm project and got to play on the musician’s guitar... it was cool!”

“I like the music program because it helps me learn new music tips. I like the special guests".
