Background Statement

ABOUT US:

The Look of Love is a new nonprofit organization that specializes in providing FREE, ongoing, multicultural haircare and salon services for abused and neglected children in the foster care system, and homeless youth in search of employment.

As the only ongoing haircare and salon program for foster children, our primary goal is to provide free haircare services to children and youth in need. We strive to build self-esteem, provide love and encouragement, and despite the pains of the past, inspire the children to pursue their dreams.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW:

The Look of Love: Haircare for Foster Children was founded in 2016 by Niya Parks and launched July 16, 2018 on “Global Hug Your Child Day!”

Through collaborative partnerships with service providers throughout the western United States, The Look of Love seeks to provide desperately needed haircare services to abused and neglected children in our foster care system, and homeless youth in search of employment.

WHAT’S THE NEED?

• There are a great number of children in the foster care system, and many children are in desperate need of haircare services, especially children who contend with more difficult to manage hair textures.

• Living in our world, we are constantly reminded of the importance of appearance, and the impact that appearance plays on a person’s self-esteem, how others judge us, and our opportunities to excel. Because many of these children already come from broken and abusive homes, their spirits are already broken. That is why it is so crucial that our organization partners with members of our community like you to help bring much needed support and services to vulnerable children in foster care.

Impact Statement

There were a number of accomplishment in 2018 for which we are grateful Three of those accomplishments were: The Look of Love launched on “Global Hug Your Child Day” 2018. We are the first organization of its kind in the country, offering free, ongoing, multicultural haircare and salon services for foster children and homeless youth. And we successfully aligned with salons and barbershops in the community to provide free services to children and youth in need, and provided free haircare consultations for caregivers.
Our most immediate goals for 2019 are to launch The Look of Love in the founder’s home state of California and serve Riverside, San Bernardino, Orange, Los Angeles Counties and beyond. Multiply the number of children served. Increase our community partnerships with salons, volunteers, and advocates. And hire critical staff needed to move our organization forward.

Needs Statement

The Look of Love is in need of the following items:

1) Volunteers to help facilitate fundraising events and partner engagements.

2) A laptop. Our current laptop blacks out often.

3) Office space with storage space to hold supplies for children.

4) Financial resources to help facilitate our expansion and to serve a greater number of children in need. With your help achieving an operating budget of $163,000.00, The Look of Love will be able to accomplish the following goals: sponsor free haircare and salon services for a significantly greater number of children, pay for organizational essentials such as insurance, office space, and equipment, and hire critical staff needed to run and grow the organization.

Currently, the founder works two jobs to keep the organization running and serving children in need, but with your help, we can do even greater things!

Every gift is appreciate and every dollar will make a difference.

Thank you!

The Look of Love - Haircare for Foster Children

ABOUT US:

The Look of Love launched July 16, 2018 on “Global Hug Your Child Day!”

The Look of Love is the first nonprofit organization in the entire United States that specializes in providing FREE, ongoing, multicultural haircare and salon services for abused and neglected children in the foster care system, and homeless youth in search of employment, up to age 24.

WHAT'S THE NEED?

There are a great number of children in the foster care system, and many children are in desperate need of haircare services.

Living in our society, we are constantly reminded of the importance of appearance, and the impact that appearance plays on a person’s self-esteem, how others judge us, and our opportunities to excel. Because many of these children already come from broken and abusive homes, their spirits are already wounded. That is why it is so crucial that our organization, The Look of Love, partners with members of our community like you to help bring much needed support and services to vulnerable children in foster care.

Budget  $4,200.00
Category  Human Services, General/Other Foster Care
Population Served Children and Youth (0 - 19 years) Homeless Unemployed, Underemployed, Dislocated
Program Short-Term Success
Through the support of the community, The Look of Love will be able to serve a greater number of children and youth. Currently, with our limited resources, we are able to provide free services to an average of 10 to 15 children per month. But with an increase in community partners, advocates, and supporters, the potential is endless and so many more children will be blessed and reminded of their beauty and value.
Program Long-Term Success
The primary goal of The Look of Love is to provide free haircare and salon services to abused and neglected children in foster care, and homeless youth that are searching for employment.

In addition to supporting the children and youth of our communities through direct services, we will also publish a foster parents haircare resource guide, distribute free haircare products to participants, provide free basic and ethnic haircare consultations and training events so that children, youth, and caregivers are given the tools and knowledge to maintain beautiful, healthy hair long-term.

Here at The Look of Love, we understand the value of appearance, the emotional impact that appearance has on children and the direct correlation that exists between how we look, how we feel, how others perceive us, and our opportunities to excel. With our free haircare services, foster children will regain the confidence to go to school, and homeless youth will be supported in their efforts to gain employment.

As the first and only nonprofit organization of its kind in the country, we delight in providing free haircare services to children and youth in need. We strive to build self-esteem, provide love and encouragement, and despite the pains of the past, inspire the children to pursue their dreams.

Program Success Monitored By
The Look of Love conducts email surveys from program participants that wish to provide feedback. So far, the feedback we have received has been positive and the children have been jazzed about their new hairstyles and appearance!

Of the feedback we have received, we have also taken into consideration the children's entertainment while they wait for services, and we are working towards implementing treat bags that will contain a small coloring book and a healthy snack to be given to each child while they wait.

Here at The Look of Love, we value the children and caregivers of our communities and we strive to make the haircare experience as pleasant as possible.
Examples of Program Success
Since the launch of The Look of Love in 2018, we have had the fortunate opportunity to serve nearly 50 amazing children, and provided free basic and ethnic haircare consultations to caregivers that request our guidance.

What we have learned during this period is that not only are our one-of-a-kind free services a blessing for the children we serve, but group home managers and staff were particularly touched and appreciative of our free program. One particular caregiver expressed what a struggle it has been to provide appropriate haircare services for children in foster care because their just aren't enough resources to cover all of the children’s needs.  He was extremely grateful for our services and calls regularly to secure appointments for children in his care.

It truly does take a village to raise children into love and light, and the The Look of Love welcomes the partnership of our communities to help bring much needed support and services to vulnerable children and caregivers in need of our compassion and support.
