Mission StatementMORE »

The mission of Fullerton Friends of Music (FFM) is to present high quality classical chamber music performances to the community in and around Fullerton and Orange County, CA. The organization believes that "classical music for smaller spaces" is a genre in which the great composers have expressed their most intimate and profound feelings. Thus its focus has been, since its inception in 1958, on chamber music. FFM seeks to present music from varying time periods—from baroque to contemporary music—firmly rooted in the Western classical tradition of art music. All concerts are performed by accomplished professional chamber music ensembles and presented free to the public.

FFM seeks to present music from varying time periods—from baroque to contemporary music—firmly rooted in the Western classical tradition of art music. Background Statement

Fullerton Friends of Music (FFM) has been running each year since 1958, founded by Beulah Strickler. The organization has had two Artistic Directors: Beulah Strickler (1958 - 2002) and Valerie Bernstein (2002 - present). In 2013, the series was awarded the prestigious Helena Modjeska Cultural Legacy Award for Artistic Visionary.

The concept of FFM is simple and has remained consistent throughout its history: provide top caliber classical chamber music, free of charge. The organization has sustained itself by way of membership donations, private donors, Board support, corporate donations, and foundation support. Their Board is very involved in sustaining the organization, both financially and in terms of helping advertise, produce, and manage. Established in the mid-60’s, and witness to Fullerton’s development over the years, FFM has been one of few significant presenters of classical music in Fullerton and greater Orange County. While Los Angeles itself is a hub of classical music activity, it is often too far to frequently travel to for those living outside of its suburbs, in addition to being, for many, prohibitively expensive. FFM provides a free alternative, with the same quality of music, and has enjoyed consistent community support of this mission. Moreover, FFM provides a local opportunity for the classical music students of CSU-Fullerton and Fullerton College to hear (and learn from) the professional, world-class musicians performing at FFM.

The organization is devoted to traditional Western classical music, performed by some of the most highly regarded ensembles and performers in the world. It has featured contemporary music at times during its history, and has increasingly done so since Valerie Bernstein became Director (2002). The organization will continue this trend into the future. Finally, FFM's long and respected tenure in Fullerton speaks to the responsibility and effectiveness of its management and direction.

Impact Statement

Fullerton Friends of Music (FFM) is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing live music concerts featuring professional classical chamber music and Early Period music ensembles and artists. FFM has been presenting classical chamber music for the past six decades, most recently under the direction of Valerie Bernstein (since 2002). The series presents five major concerts per season, on Sundays at 330 PM. Each concert has always been (and continues to be) free to the public. The organization's goal is to sustain the world-class level of its performances alongside the accessibility of its concert offerings.

Over FFM's long history it has presented a significant amount of American classical repertoire, alongside performances of the major figures of classical music, including Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, J.S. Bach, Stravinsky, Mendelssohn, Schubert, Webern, and many others. One to two concerts each season have a contemporary American music focus and the remaining programming is filled out by the major historical composers/figures of classical music, including works from Early Music and Renaissance periods. FFM features high quality performance groups, many with a wide range of accolades including Grammy Awards, International Performance Prizes, Chamber Music Ensemble Awards, and more; such recent ensembles include: The Ying Quartet, Jolente de Maeyer and Nikolaas Kende, WindSync, LA Wind and Piano Sextet, The Neave Trio, Viklarbo Chamber Ensemble, Diotima Quartet, The Zodiac Trio, The Jasper Quartet, Dephi Trio, Adaskin String Trio, Thomas Gallant, The Aspen String Trio, LA Percussion Quartet, and the Afiara String Quartet, among others. FFM has also presented (and will continue to present) its share of iconic American contemporary composers, including Christopher Theofanidis, Augusta Read Thomas, Leonard Bernstein, John Corigliano, Lee Konitz, Paul Schoenfield, John Cage, Steve Reich, John Bergamo, and others.
